Zermatt & Jungfrau region: shady hikes?

Short summary – read this first

Stacey, along with her husband, is looking for shaded hiking options in Zermatt and Murren due to her husband's need to limit sun exposure. They have been considering popular hikes but seek alternatives that are scenic yet less exposed to the sun during their three nights in Zermatt and four nights in Murren.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider the hike from Grutschalp to Murren, which offers good shade along the route.
  • In Zermatt, the Gorner Gorge hike is mostly in the forest and provides shade; you can also take a cable car to Furi if needed.
  • Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking clothing is advisable to reduce sun exposure.

    Hello,

My husband and I had some of the popular hikes picked out and due to a new medication, my husband has to limit sun exposure. Some of the hikes we were thinking on doing were 5 lakes trail, Mannlichen to Klein Scheidegg, Bachalpsee, The North Face Trail. These all appear to be out in the open and very exposed. Looking for suggestions on hikes that might be a little more shaded, but still be as scenic. We will be staying 3 nights in Zermatt and 4 nights in Murren. If you have any other suggestions as well on getting the most out of seeing the mountain sights, but limiting sun exposure, that would be great.

    Thank you,

    Stacey

    Hi Stacey,

Whilst in Zermatt, there is the short hike to Furi or the hike, Riffelalp to Sunnegga. More details in the below links.

    In the Jungfrau region:

I hope this helps and offers you a few options when you are here.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

The Grutschalp to Murren hike is fairly well shaded for much of the route.

To be on the safe side, would wearing a wide brimmed hat and UV blocking clothing (and sun block) help with limiting sun exposure? Might be worth running by your husband’s physician. My husband had to apply ointment to his scalp as part of treating pre-cancerous lesions while we were in Switzerland, but wore with a wide-brimmed hat or bandanna, which helped tremendously with sun sensitivity.

    Hi Stacey,

In Zermatt, I could suggest a hike through the Gorner Gorge and then walk up to Furi. The path is mostly in the forest and therefore quite shady. If walking up is too strenuous, you can also take the cable car up to Furi and walk down to Zermatt.

    Have a great trip! Martin
