From previous forum, I understand I can travel from Zermatt to Florence, Italy via brig. I would like to know if I need to buy the tickets in advance from Zermatt to brig? I will purchase the half fare card for Swiss travel.

    Thanks

No you don’t ned to buy a ticket from Zermatt to Brig. In fact it is probably better to look for a connection with a EuroCity train at Visp. It is easier to change there than at Brig. There are EuroCity trains that run through Visp to Milan with no changes.

See http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy and use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) or the highly-recommended SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) to plan your travel.

Many thanks. If I would like to leave Zermatt in the morning, say, 7 am on 19 Aug 2019. Could you help to search the train linkage from Zermatt to Florence as I am not sure how to search?

Just put Zermatt to Florence in the timetable link I gave you above. If you are planning to visit Switzerland, understanding the timetable is an essential skill. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on this page – http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable.

Many thanks. Please advise whether I only need to buy tickets from Domodossola to Florence. There are four changes in train station. Are the platform near? Can I stay seated in Domodossola and no need to get out to Milan? Many thanks

Some connections you change trains at Domodossola. The EuroCity trains go straight through. You want to try to pick one of those if you want to stay seated. That may involve a change at Brig instead of Visp for the fastest connection. At Brig the train from Zermatt stops at Brig BahnhofPlatz at a platform outside but very close to the entrance to the main station where you catch the EC at Brig. Check it out on Google Maps. Platform changes at Milan, I don’t know about.

You only need tickets and seat reservations from Domodossola to Firenze.

Great thanks. If I choose the route to change at Brig, that means I only need to buy the tickets in advance from Domodossola to Florence and I have half fare Swiss travel card, then I can buy the ticket at Zermatt station from Zermatt to Brig or Zermatt to Domodossola even I change station at Brig. Please advise. Please also advice if I walk at Brig Bahnhofplatz to Brig how long does it talk. Many thanks

That’s correct – you need to buy a half-fare ticket for Zermatt to Domodossola to cover the Swiss part of your journey and another ticket for the Italian leg. You can theoretically buy a ticket for the whole trip, and make seat reservations where applicable on the SBB website. That would be referred to as a passholder fare as described at http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy. I’m just not sure how that compares in price for to buying the Italian tickets separately in advance.

If you get the 8:13 from Zermatt then you have a 7 minute connection to change from Platfrom 14 to Platform 6. You can download a map of Brig station (with platform numbers) at http://www.sbb.ch/en/station-services/railway-stations/brig-station.html

If you get the 7:37 from Zermatt you will need to change at Visp to get to Brig but at least you will have a much more relaxed connection to the EuroCity 37. The change at Brig has plenty of time and won’t be a problem.

There is actually a 7:52 from Zermatt which goes direct to Brig and provides an easy connection to the EC37 but that is the Glacier Express which requires advance compulsory reservations which cost CHF38!

Great thanks for your suggestions. By the way, if we leave Switzerland and go to Italy and will not go back, where can I get the tax refund? Should I go to Domodossola to get the tax refund? If that is the case, I must take the train to go to Domodossola and then to Milan. Please advise. How much time should I allow to get the tax refund such that I can catch the train from Domodossola to Milan. Many thanks

Sorry but I have no experience of tax refunds at the border. This thread may be of some use.

Thanks. Just want to confirm the tickets from Zermatt to Domodossola will not be sold out. I can purchase at the train station, right?

Tickets on Swiss trains don’t “sell out” except on routes where reservations are compulsory.
