Zermatt to Interlaken: most scenic train

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip from Zermatt to Interlaken in September and is looking for advice on the best scenic train routes. They are curious about whether a regular train offers similar views to a more advertised scenic train and which side of the train provides the best views. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Key takeaways:
  • Take the Regio-Express Lötschberger train for stunning views along the mountain route, as it’s a regular train with great scenery.
  • For an even longer scenic experience, consider the Golden Pass route via Montreux and Zweisimmen.
  • Sit on the left side of the train for the best views during your journey.

Traveling from Zermatt to Interlaken in September:

    (1) What is the best train to take in terms of the most scenic views along the way? I seem to recall one route has a long-ish tunnel (no views), and that another route may take a bit longer time-wise, but is more scenic. Am I right?

    (2) I think I remember folks saying the ‘regular’ train is just as good as the more expensive, more advertised, one. Any thoughts on that?

    (3) Is there a better side of the train to sit on, in order to get the best views?

Many thanks for any help you can offer. Myswissalps is the best!

Zermatt to Interlaken via Kandersteg. You will then travel on the Regio-Express Lötschberger train over the traditional, more than 100 year old mountain route, giving you a wonderful view along the impressive peaks and down into the Rhone Valley. It’s just a regular train with a posh name. Sit on the left.

Or if time is not a problem and you don’t mind a long train ride go via Montreux and Zweisimmen using the Golden Pass route (http://www.myswissalps.com/go ldenpass). That’s probably the one that you read about regular trains offering the same views as Panoramic train.
