Hello. I will be travelling from India.

I have heard a lot about Glacier Express so we would like to take that route while returning to Zurich from Zermatt. We are okay with long travel. But I’m really confused on what route we should take to travel from Zermatt to Zurich Via Glacier Express. Please help.

    Thanks.

Hi VikMa, and thanks for joining MySwissAlps!

The Glacier Express is a beautiful train ride indeed, and I can for sure recommend it. It’s a pretty long journey if you use it from Zermatt to Zurich, but doable in one day if you don’t ride the entire route. You’d board the Glacier Express in Zermatt in the morning and then travel as far as you think is appropriate. I’d recommend to ride as far as Chur, to enjoy several sections of the route. Chur is a good location to switch trains to Zurich, where you’ll arrive in another 1h15 to 1h30.

You can also choose to continue the route further south towards St. Moritz. However, it will take much longer to get to Zurich then, and you’ll probably be doing some backtracking as most trains from St. Moritz to Zurich use the same stretch back to Chur.

Please find the entire Glacier Express route explained at http://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress/gettingthere. You can plan your trip in detail with the aid of the timetables linked there, and with the SBB timetable at http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable.

I don’t know about the rest of your itinerary, but it makes sense to find out whether a rail pass is cheaper than regular tickets. Here’s how to find out which option is best: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass. You’ll find a chatbot for quick advice and tools for detailed comparison there. Apart from your rail pass or ticket, you’ll need a seat reservation for the Glacier Express: http://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress/tickets. Seat reservations are not needed if you travel the same route on regular regional trains, but in my view the Glacier Express trains are definitely worth the ride and those seat reservation costs. Thank you for all the information.

I would love to share my itinerary once it’s final. Just to know if I have taken the right way to explore Switzerland. Will that be okay if I share my itinerary? Suggestions would help us a lot.

    Hi Arno,

    Definitely has a personality. 😉

Meanwhile another floating “Reply” button has surfaced at http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/seat-reservations-in-september.

Is it a coincidence that both the recent floating “Reply” button problems followed a post from Ildiko or is it perhaps something I am doing. The latter seems unlikely given I don’t have moderator powers and therefore don’t have the capacity to muck up the HTML.

Hi Rockoyster! That’s a bit of a software glitch that can happen to all of us, and it can be caused by copying and/or pasting text. It’s relatively easy to fix though :-).
