We are traveling from Zurich to Zermatt December 25 on Christmas Day. What is your recommendation for a first class experience for 8 travelers? We will have tons of luggage and prefer to book a train that will have a separate area to handle all of our bags and perhaps a concierge style service. December 30th we plan to travel from Zermatt to Venice by train and would love to find the same first class service and cabin. Any recommendations?

thank you!

Hi sjomishkin, welcome to MySwissAlps!

Usually there's no need to make seat reservations for regular trains such as Zurich-Zermatt, but for a group op 8 it might be a good idea indeed. You can find information and arrange for your reservations here: www.myswissalps.com/train/reservations. All connections Zurich-Zermatt and Zermatt-Venice (enter "Venezia S. Lucia") can be found using the SBB timetable at www.myswissalps.com/timetable. The icons for each train indicate whether reservations are possible and/or required.

In general, it's very easy to travel by train in Switzerland: www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/howtotravel. I'm not aware of personal concierges, but there are attendants at rail stations and at the trains who will help you out with any question you might have. 1st class is very comfortable (www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/2nd1stclass). Many trains offer meal services too (www.myswissalps.com/activities/culinary/dineonthemove). Detailed information about (1st class) services can be found here: www.sbb.ch/en/station-services/during-your-journey/on-board-service.html.

You can carry along your own luggage. Trains are equipped with enough space to store quite some luggage. But if you feel it's too much of a hassle, you can use one of the luggage transport services instead. The options are explained at www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/luggage.

Please find information about your journey into Italy here: https://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy.

Since you'll be traveling by train, it makes sense so find out if any of the rail passes can save money compared to buying full-fare tickets. In nearly all cases, a rail pass is cheaper: www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass

I hope this gets you started. Feel free to get back to us with if you have further questions!

There are no 'concierge' type trains Zurich - Zermatt.

The route is a main line Intercity train (route IC8) Zurich Airport - Visp.

At Visp you change into the narrow gauge Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) Visp - Zermatt railway (which I have travelled on hundreds of times)
