    Dear MySwissAlps members,

We may be getting a half fare card instead of a Swiss Travel Pass. All along, i had thought that as long as one of the adults holds a half fare card or STP, the child would travel for free.

From my research online, it seems that children aged 6 to 15 needs some kind of card at a cost of CHF 30 per child? For e.g., if one of the adults holds a half fare card or STP, it is not completely free for the child to travel to the Jungfraujoch? Is this a one-time fee for the child? Are there any other attractions which a such a travel card has to be paid for the child?

It is not completely clear to me. Thank you!

    Hi Ketoeato,

In case, you travel with a Swiss Travel System rail pass: a Swiss Travel Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass), Swiss Travel Pass Flex ((http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpassflex) or Swiss Half Fare Card (http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard) you can get the Swiss Family Card for free: http://www.myswissalps.com/swissfamilycard. The Swiss Family Card allows your children, stepchildren and foster children from 6 to 15 years old to travel along for free.

You get the Swiss Family Card when you buy your Swiss Travel Pass (Flex) or Swiss Half Fare Card. I recommend buying it from here, as it will add the Swiss Family Card as you add your child to the system: https://shop.switzerlandtravelcentre.com/

In case you travel with no pass or with other passes then above those 3, you have to get the Junior Travel Card for your child: http://www.myswissalps.com/juniortravelcard. That one costs 30 CHF.

I hope this clears things up,

    Ildiko

    Dear Ildiko,

    Thank you for your reply.

I am looking at the information for Gornergrat round-trip, and am confused about the mention of the “Junior / Grandchild Card when accompanied by a parent / grandparent: free“

    – With Half-Fare, GA, Swiss Travel Pass, the adults get a reduction of 50%

    – Children from 9 -15.99 years get a 50% reduction

    – Children from 9 – 15.99 years with Junior / Grandchild Card when accompanied by a parent / grandparent: free

If the adults have the Half-Fare/Swiss Travel Pass, do the child (9 years old) get to travel for free even without the Junior / Grandchild Card?

Is the Junior / Grandchild Card the one that cost 30 CHF?

    Hi Ketoeato,

The Junior/Granchild Card are tailored for residents.

If you purchase the Swiss Half Fare Card or a Swiss Travel Pass (which are created mainly for tourists), you can request for a Swiss Family Card. This is given complimentary and allows your children (between 6 and 16 years old) to travel along for free. You can find the details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swissfamilycard

Let us know if you need more info.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi Ketoatao,

As long as you request the free Swiss Family Card when ordering your Swiss Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass (Flex): yes, your children get to travel along for free anywhere, even on the routes that are discounted for parents. So with a Swiss Family Card your children will travel for free to Gornergrat, Jungfraujoch and all other routes on the validity maps of the parents’ passes for free. Please see http://www.myswissalps.com/swissfamilycard/validity and http://www.myswissalps.com/swissfamilycard/price.

The Junior Travelcard is usually a good solution if the parents don’t have a Swiss Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass (Flex). That’s the one that costs CHF 30, but you won’t need it: https://www.myswissalps.com/juniortravelcard.
