Two of us are traveling Jul 26 from Basel to Lucerne for one night followed by 6 nights in Grindelwald. Then one-way to Zurich on Aug 2. We plan to hike and journey around Grindelwald. I'm confused, what would be the best rail option for us?
HI Chas3016 and welcome to MySwissAlps!
For the Grindelwald area, the Jungfrau Travel Pass is often a good choice (if you don't go far from Grindelwald during your 6 days). Then you'll need to buy point to point tickets for trips from Basel to Lucerne and back to Zurich. https://www.myswissalp s.com/jungfrautravelpa ss https://www.myswissalp s.com/traintickets
If you want a bigger coverage area, then look at the Regional Pass - Bernese Oberland. https://www.myswissalp s.com/regionalpassbern eseoberland
Another nice option is the Swiss Half Fare Card to get 50% off all tickets you buy for train, boat, cable car etc. https://www.myswissalp s.com/swisshalffarecar d
In the end, to know which rail pass is the best for your specific itinerary you need to plan out all trips you will make (train, bus, boat, cable car) and compare the prices for regular tickets to the rail pass price (and which routes/mountains are free or discounted). Once you have that information you can read our page here on how to choose the best rail pass. There is a spreadsheet there to help with the math. :) https://www.myswissalp s.com/train/ticketspas ses/practical/choosera ilpass
