Swiss Travel Pass plus Top of Europe Pass too?

    Hello,

My partner and I will be traveling from Basel to Grindelwald Sat June 11th. We will based in Grindelwald and depart 4 days later Weds June 15th to Venice, Italy.

We definitely want to visit Jungfraujoch as well as explore Wengen, Interlaken, First, Murren, Lauterbrunnen, and Kanderstag to hike Lake Oeschinensee.

We are trying to determine if the Swiss Travel Pass or Half Price Card makes sense to purchase to help cover the expense of Basel to Grindelwald and then some portion of our trip of Switzerland to Italy (not sure we can even get a discount for the Switzerland leg heading to Venice. It shows 3 changes from Grindelwald to Venice when attempting to examine fares.)?

    Thank you for your insights!

    Hi Wild201,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Based on your plans, perhaps the Regional Pass Bernese Oberland might offer the best value. This pass will cover your trips and excursions in the Jungfrau region (Interlaken, Wengen, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen and Mürren) as well the excursion to Lake Oeschinensee and Kandersteg.

On your first day, you just need a ticket from Basel to Bern (the train from Bern to Grindelwald is covered in the RPBO). On the last day, the RPBO is valid up to Brig. So you just need a ticket from Brig to Venice for your onward adventure to Italy. You can find information about tickets to Italy here: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy

Be sure to check this guide on how to choose the best railpass: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Thank you Anna! So helpful!

Does the Bernese Oberland pass offer discounts to Jungfraujoch?

I also can’t find where the seasonal Top of Europe pass includes partial train fare from Bern to Grindelwald or onward to Brig. So it appears the key benefit for Top Of Europe Pass may be the inclusion of the high price to Jungfraujoch. Thoughts?

    Thank you so much!

    Hi Wild201,

Yes, the Regional Pass Bernese Oberland also gives you discounts:

    • Train from Eigergletscher to Jungfraujoch: Fixed discounted price (2022): CHF 99 for a return ticket.
    • Train to Eigergletscher: free
    • Cable car from Grindelwald Terminal to Eigergletscher (Eiger Express): free

The pass gives you even more discounts in the Jungfrau region, check it here: http://www.myswissalps.com/regionalpassberneseoberland/validity

The Top of Europe Pass has a smaller validity area as it is only valid in the Jungfrau region. In your case from Interlaken. So from Brig or Bern to Interlaken you need to buy a train ticket.

    I hope this helps,

    Ildiko
