Hi Bearlerie,
Welcome to MySwissAlps.
Yes, the Swiss Travel Pass is valid anywhere in Switzerland. You can view the validity map here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity. You can travel to Chiasso via any route and you won’t need a ticket or reservation. All you need is a ticket for the journey from Chiasso to Milan. You can purchase tickets from the station or online here: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy
The Golden Pass line between Lucerne and Montreux is indeed a scenic route. You don’t have to travel the whole route if you don’t have the time. You can find more details on how to plan your Golden Pass trip here: http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/gettingthere
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Anna

Hi Bearlerie,
Seat reservations aren’t very common on the GoldenPass line (https://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/tickets). November is low season, so there will be even fewer reserved seats than in other months. If a seat is reserved, this will be indicated by a label on the top of the seat, or an electronic display above it. In case you miss such signs the traveler with the reserved seat will notify you, and then you can simply move to another spot.

Train to Milan:
You seem to be confusing the two routes; Brig – Milan is not via Chiasso. The two main north south transalpine routes in Switzerland are:
- the Simplon route: Brig – Simplon Tunnel – Domodossola – Milan
- The Gotthard route: Zurich /Basel – Arth Goldau – Bellinzona – Chiasso – Milan.
On both these routes there are direct Eurocity trains that cross the border. However the Swiss and Italian railway systems are different, Switzerland has a general policy of reservation-free travel on main line trains but Italy has a policy of reservation obligatory supplement payable on long distance and Interantional trains. So, yes you can travel in the same train and stay on it at the border but you need a reservation from the Italian section.

Golden Pass line:
The true Golden Pass line is just the section Zweisimmen – Montreux. Reservations are possible but not needed outside peak season
This line is closed for engineering work between Montbovon and Montreux until late November
Please see this thread that has covered this situation just a few days ago:

Thank you for your help!
I will be travelling from Montreux to Milan via Brig, so I have booked my ticket from Domodossola to Milan, but will board the same train from Brig.
