Zermatt to Lucerne – most scenic route?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a family trip from Zermatt to Lucerne this June and is considering whether to take the quicker route via Bern or the more scenic route through Interlaken, even if it adds 30 minutes to their journey. They’re looking for opinions on which route is better for scenery.

Key takeaways:
  • Taking the route through Interlaken is considered more scenic and enjoyable, particularly with the Luzern – Interlaken Express train that features larger windows for better views.
  • The journey via Interlaken is part of the Golden Pass route, known for its picturesque landscapes, making it a worthwhile choice despite the extra travel time.

My family and I will be traveling from Zermatt to Lucerne this June. The route that is quickest is Zermatt to Bern then on to Lucerne. I was wondering would going through Interlaken to Lucerne be more scenic even if it takes 30 minutes longer. Any thoughts would be great thanks.

    Hi RandMarg,

Yes, I think it is more scenic for sure. The Interlaken Ost to Lucerne train trip is part of the Golden Pass route and is on what I call a semi-panoramic train as well (a little larger & more windows than normal). It is a great route to do and as you note not much longer.

All trains running this route are the same (noted as Luzern – Interlaken Express) on the timetable.
