Zurich, Interlaken and Jungfrau region in May

    Hi,

I’m flying into Zurich on May 25th and planning on staying in Beatenberg for 3-4 days. I’m mainly concerned with visiting places in the Jungfrau region – Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Kleine Scheidegg, etc. Then I have to go back to Zurich to catch a flight to Italy. We rented a car but I’m starting to rethink whether that’s necessary with the limited places we can drive, esp. in the Jungfrau region. I’ve heard of the Jungfrau Travel pass, Berland Oberland Pass, Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Half Fare Card. What would you recommend we buy, in terms of a pass/passes, for our trip? Is a car going to help us given our itinerary? Thanks!

A rental car will be of very little use (and expensive).

Staying in Beatenberg, the Berner Oberland regional pass (BO Pass) will without doubt give you the best coverage.

The BO Pass is one of the best regional passes available, giving free rides on a huge proportion of the Berner Oberland region’s railways, free boat rides on the Thunersee and Brienzersee lakes and Free travel on over 25 mountain cable cars/lifts.

The BO Pass also gives free travel way beyond the borders of the Berner Oberland region on certain lines. One of the free lines outside the BO region is Luzern – Interlaken. This is a huge benefit to tourists arriving into Switzerland at Zurich

All you will need to get from Zurich to the BO Pass validity area is a point to point ticket for the short journey from Zurich to Luzern. Buy this ticket as soon as possible in case you get a cheap Supersaver fare offer.

    Hi Al sids,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

I agree with 1960man’s suggestion to get the Berner Oberland Pass for your trip. You can view and download the validity map here: http://www.myswissalps.com/regionalpassberneseoberland/validity

If you still decide to drive, consider getting the Swiss Half Fare Card to avoid paying expensive mountain excursion tickets. You can find more information about the Swiss Half Fare Card here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard

    Anna

Thank you for that info. Is there a reason you recommend going through Luzern instead of Bern to get to Interlaken?

And would the Swiss Half Fare Card cover train rides from Zurich to Luzern/Bern?

    Hello Al sids,

With the Swiss Half Fare Card, your train journey from Zurich to Lucerne / Bern would be 50% discounted, from the full fare. For example if the full fare was displayed at CHF50, it would be CHF25 with the Swiss Half Fare Card.

If you purchased the Berner Oberland Pass for your trip, you would still need a ticket from Zurich to the point where the Berner Oberland Pass becomes valid. Please see the coverage map that Anna provided earlier.

It would be cheaper to reach Lucerne, than Bern. You can view pricing via the timetable link, by keying in your chosen route: https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

    I hope this clarifies.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

On the Overview tab of the Berner Oberland Pass – http://www.myswissalps.com/regionalpassberneseoberland – it says “remaining transportation is discounted by 50%.” Does that mean the Berner Oberland Pass is also a Swiss Half Fare Card? Is there any benefit to having both?

No, information is referring only to the Berner Oberland Pass.

    Hi Al sids,

The Swiss Half Fare Card is valid throughout Switzerland: https://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard/validity. The Berner Oberland Pass is only valid in the Bernese Oberland region, providing free travel to most destinations in the region and up to 50% discounts on specific routes only. You can study the validity map here: http://www.myswissalps.com/regionalpassberneseoberland/validity

    Regards,

    Anna
