Is the Saver Day Pass cheaper than the Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Half Fare Card?
Don’t be fooled by the name “Saver” Day Pass. It can indeed be a very cheap option for short stays in Switzerland, with few or no mountain trips. But in many other cases, a different pass will likely be cheaper and more flexible. Find lots of examples here.
How does the Saver Day Pass work?
The Saver Day Pass is a pdf document that you keep on your phone. You can travel as much as you like by train, bus and boat, and you do not need other tickets. Just board with your pass and enjoy the ride. In the case of cableways and other mountain transport that is not included, you need to buy a regular ticket.
How to start using your Saver Day Pass
The Saver Day Pass is an e-ticket. It’s sent as a pdf by e-mail. You can print it out if you want, but that’s not required. You can simply show the pdf on your phone when asked for.
No validation is required. The Saver Day Pass is dated and only valid on that day, until 05:00 the following morning.
Seat reservations
You do not need seat reservations for 99% of all trains and buses in Switzerland. You can simply board with your Saver Day Pass.
Exceptions are some international trains and a few panoramic trains like the Glacier Express and Bernina Express. Seat reservations are not included in the Saver Day Pass. If you need or want seat reservations, you have to arrange for them separately.
On board the train, bus, or boat
You will need to present your Saver Day Pass to ticket controllers upon request. The controller may want to check your passport as well, to make sure you’re the owner of the presented pass. If you bought a 50% discounted Saver Day Pass, you have to show your Swiss Half Fare Card as well.
Additional tickets
There are two types of trips you can make with a Saver Day Pass:
- Trips on routes that are included. You can just board any train, bus, boat, et cetera on such routes. You do not need a ticket.
- Trips on routes that are not included. This mostly applies to transportation to the mountains. You need to arrange for a ticket. You can do so online or at the ticket office of the cable car.
A few mountain routes also allow free traveling. If you can’t scan your Saver Day Pass pdf to access the cableway or funicular, ask the staff upon showing your pass. They will get you a free ticket to open the turnstiles.
Hidden gems included in the Saver Day Pass
The Saver Day Pass is very suitable for town-to-town travel, but some of the tourist attractions are included for free as well. The map and coverage overview explain all benefits.
Some of my personal favorites are:
- the train to Les Pléiades (near Montreux);
- the Mount Rigi cogwheel train, as well as the boats on Lake Lucerne;
- the cogwheel train to Rochers-de-Naye (from Montreux);
- the cableway to the Stanserhorn (near Lucerne);
- the spectacular Stoos funicular (Lake Lucerne region).
