12 days Laax-Flims in Aug with 2 yrs old to hike

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a family trip to Switzerland, flying into Zurich in August with their 2-year-old daughter and mother-in-law. They want to base themselves for hiking but are concerned about their current booking at the Rancho Laax complex, which is slightly distant from Laax town and less popular compared to areas like Jungfrau and Lucerne. They seek advice on whether Laax is a good choice for a family vacation and alternatives for accommodations.

Key takeaways:
  • Laax is family-friendly, but other resorts like St Moritz and Appenzell may offer more options for toddlers and family activities.
  • Look into more established summer resorts such as Engelberg, Zermatt, and Grindelwald for better hiking trails and town accessibility.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass can help save on transportation costs if you decide to explore more popular areas during your stay.

Hi all, as title says we’ll be flying into Zurich in August with our 2-yr old daughter and are looking for a place or two to base ourselves at, with the primary intention of hiking most days (daughter on backpack carrier). We’ll have a car with us and don’t mind driving 30 mins every day to a good hiking trail. But we do wish the drive from/to Zurich airport will be 2-3 hours max.

Mother in law will be joining us so we’ll need at least a 2-bedroom apartment. Children facilities (playground/pool) on-site would be welcome. A nice town/village to walk around in the afternoons would also be appreciated. For reference, last summer we stayed two weeks in Tirol, one week each in Otztal and Zillertal.

Now we do already have something planned – we have an apartment booked at the Rancho Laax complex just outside Laax. From my research there should be plenty of hiking trails in north Graubünden as well as near Walensee, the apartment complex has lots of facilities also for children, and the drive from Zurich is not too long. BUT, I have two worries: (a) it’s a bit outside of Laax itself, so we won’t be able to easily stroll into town, and (b) Laax-Flims is less well-known (at least to me) than the more famous Jungfrau, Lucerne, St Moritz regions etc. so I’m wondering if indeed it’s a good choice?

Any input would be much appreciated!

Hi Chenav and welcome to MySwissAlps!

I don’t have experience travelling with children (yet!) however a friend of mine told me that Laax is very family friendly (she goes there ever year) so you should be at ease there. There might be others who have first hand experience.

From my experience, St Moritz http://www.myswissalps.com/st moritz is very family friendly as well as areas like Appenzell (I see lots of families, toddlers, strollers etc when travelling to those areas) and they are not far from Zurich.

Try searching for the words “toddler, hike, children” or similar on our forums for what other people have done (box top right hand corner of our site). I include one such thread: http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/switzerland-with-a-toddler

Our hiking section with searchable hikes might also be useful: http://www.myswissalps.com/hi king

Hope this helps in your planning!

Laax is a bit dead in summer (it’s a ‘recent’ resort and therefore mainly developed for winter sports). I doubt you would walk into ‘town’ as there is hardly any ‘town’ in Laax. And I would say the walking routes around Laax are not as good as other ‘traditional summer’ Swiss resorts.

Personally I would aim for more long established summer resorts, eg:

    Engelberg

    Zermatt

    Grindelwald/Wengen/Murren

    Arosa

    Lake Luzern

Have a look at Swiss Holiday Park Morschach

Thank you both for the replies. Unfortunately I found that apartment availability is the main factor in deciding where to stay. The fact that our vacation is not Sat-Sat probably makes it even harder to find a place. I did find and like Swiss Holiday Park Morschach but couldn’t book there on our dates.

I was able to book a nice and large apartment at Pradas Resort in Brigels, much nicer and self sufficientthan the apartment in Laax. I realize neither place has a real “town”. From what I see the Surselva area has lots of nice hiking we can do with our daughter. I know it can’t be compared to Zermatt or Grindelwald (anyway we couldn’t do very hard hikes with our daughter at this point) but pictures online suggest it’s beautiful nonetheless.

Do you have ideas where to find resorts with reservations less limited to days of the week? Do you think Brigels/Surselva would be very disappointing? At least I can hope the crowds wouldn’t be as bad as other, bigger more famous resorts…

    Thanks!

Brigels is nice, but positionally not much better than Laax.

    For accomodation, try:

    homeaway

    novasol

    Interhome.com

    fewo direkt

    hometogo

    e-domizil.ch

    booking.com
