1st class versus 2nd class in Swiss trains

Short summary – read this first

Cindy is planning an 8-day trip in Switzerland, traveling from Luzern to Interlaken and then to Geneva, with mountain excursions to Mt. Titlis and Jungfrau. She wants to know the advantages of first class over second class for her journeys using the Swiss Travel Pass. The replies suggest that second class is comfortable, and she can upgrade if needed.

Key takeaways:
  • Traveling in second class is generally comfortable and offers a good experience.
  • If you choose second class, you can upgrade to first class on scenic trains for just half the fare difference.
  • First class offers more space and fewer people, which may enhance your travel comfort.

    Hi Cindy,

Please have a look at http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/practical/2nd1stcl ass for the difference between 1st and 2nd class.

In general I would say that traveling in 2nd class is very comfortable. You can always upgrade to a first class ticket for a panoramic train for example. It will cost you half the difference between the 1st and 2nd class fares.

What we have found is that you have less people in first class, more room for yourself and your luggage.

We’ve never traveled in the peak summer months so we don’t know anything about those times.

There was a major difference on the TGV from Paris to Basel but not so much on the Swiss trains.

Have a great trip. The service on the TGV was exceptional–we absolutely loved it!
