3 day budget trip Lucerne-Interlaken in September

Short summary – read this first

A solo traveler is planning a 3-day trip to Switzerland in September, focusing on Zurich and nearby alpine villages. They want advice on visiting Mount Rigi and Interlaken from Lucerne and need budget-friendly train cost estimates.

Key takeaways:
  • Stay in areas close to Lucerne to maximize your time and enjoy scenic views
  • Visiting Mount Rigi is feasible for a half-day trip; consider walking from Rigi Kaltbad to Rigi Scheidegg
  • Interlaken is not the best option due to travel time; smaller villages in the Jungfrau region are more scenic
  • Check the Swiss Travel Pass for potential savings on train fares, but assess if it's worth it for your short stay
  • Explore Lungern for a real Swiss village experience; it's very scenic and authentic.

    Hi Naghmezahedi,

Welcome to MySwissAlps! If your budget is limited I would recommend to stick to places near Lucerne. Mount Rigi is a good choice. You could visit the top, and then walk from Rigi Kaltbad to Rigi Scheidegg, for example. Take the cable car down from there. This will give you a lot of scenic views and a feel for car free villages in the Alps.

Interlaken itself is not very scenic and quite a long trip (2 hours one way) from Lucerne. To see mountain villages in that area, you’d better go to one of the smaller villages in the Jungfrau region: http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrauregion. This will take a whole day from Lucerne though.

    Hi Naghmezahedi,-

Arno did not discuss train fares.

Since you are staying only a short time in Switzerland, a discount rail pass may not work for you:

    http://www.myswissalps.com/sw issrailpasses

The timetable will give fares, but the first number shown is usually for a 50% discounted half- fare card, since almost all Swiss use them.

If you have no discount pass, double the first fares listed here:

    http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

That page gives helpful (actually, necessary) instructions and tips, then sends you to the actual timetable, accessible directly at :

    http://www.sbb.ch/en/home.htm l

Once you understand the details, you can go directly to the comprehensive SBB web site.

is Jungfrau region near the Lucerne?

according to me searches, i should go to Interlaken and after that go to Jungfrau region by train.

    is that true?

how long is between Interlaken and Jungfrau region by train?

It seems quite a long journey .

    Hi guys

I have checked the traveling times, and rescheduled my plan.

It seems that seeing the Interlaken and Jungfrau region is not possible in my limited time.

According to my limited time in Switzerland (3 days).

I think 1 days in Zurich and 2 days in Lucerne would be a good choice. My plane is as below:

First day: arriving from Munich to Lucerne , Seeing Lucerne in rest of first day,

Second day: go to mount Rigi in early morning till noon

Come back to Lucerne in noon

Go to Lungern for seeing the villages and cows 🙂 and come back to Lucerne with last train.

Third day: go to Zurich in early morning and seeing the town till night.

    Is this applicable plan?

Do you have better suggest for seeing the Zurich and beautiful villages of Switzerland ?

Can Lungern give me a sense about Switzerland villages? Or you suggest another villages such as Sachseln or Isenthal or Brienz or Murren or else?

    Thank for your replies

    Hi Naghme,

I think it makes sense to not rush things too much during a stay but rather really enjoying, whatever you decide to see.

You will find lots to do and see in the area of Lucerne and I think Lungern is a fantastic, authentic and VERY scenic village, nice choice!

For input about what to do and see in the area of Zurich see below link:
    http://www.myswissalps.com/zu rich/activities

You could e.g. visit the Rhine Falls on your last day or also consider staying in Lucerne longer, as it’s barely an hour train ride from Zurich. Depends a little on your departure time from Zurich, etc.
