6 day Switzerland trip in Christmas time

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a Christmas trip to Switzerland and has outlined a busy itinerary that includes visits to Zurich, Zermatt, Gstaad, Montreux, and Lucerne over six days. They seek advice on their schedule, specifically about the mountains they plan to visit and the costs associated with them, as well as luggage handling during their trip.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider altering your December 23 itinerary to avoid backtracking, as it may be too ambitious.
  • Skip Glacier 3000 to simplify your travel on the 23rd, since it doesn't offer discounts with your Eurail pass.
  • Luggage shipping from Zurich to Lucerne is a good option, and you can use your Eurail Global Pass for this purpose.

Hello everyone .. I am visiting Switzerland this christmas and I made a plan but I don’t know if it would work or not so I want your opinions about it.

21/12 : train from Graz in the early morning to Zurich which would arrive around 3 pm so I would wander in the christmas markets a bit then take another train to Zermatt and spend 2 nights there
22/12 : Gornergrat mountain and night in zermatt
23/12 : check out and go to Gstaad to visit Glacier 3000 early morning then take Golden pass in the afternoon to Montreux for the Christmas markets and at night head to luzern and spend 3 nights there
    24/12 : Mt. Titlis
    25/12 : Mt Pilatus
26/12 explore luzern in the morning and I will have an onward train to Amsterdam (long way out)

This is a part of a eurotour in christmas and I am going to get an Eurail pass for that which seems to be better for me as I’m gonna visit amsterdam, berlina nd prague after Switzerland so the Swiss travel pass seems more expensive in that way.

I aslo would like to get your opinions about the mountains at that time of the year ? Is those 4 mountains good or is there better mountains ? I dont’t Ski but I would like to try sledging.
Aslo that seems to be expensive because Gornergrat and Glacier 3000 have no dicount with Eurail ( titlis has 25% and pilatus 50% ) so Is there better options for that ?

    Thank you so much

    Hi Fredy_Ramzy5, welcome to MySwissAlps!

How lovely that you get to visit Switzerland in the Christmas period. I think you’ll love it. Most of your itinerary is doable, except for December 23. I recommend that you use the timetable to check traveling times: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable. You can plan things more efficiently visiting Montreux first, then head for Lucerne along the Golden Pass route (http://www.myswissalps.com/go ldenpass), maybe with a side trip to Gstaad/Glacier 3000 (http://www.myswissalps.com/glacier3000). Even that would be a whole lot for one day. In your current schedule for this day (Zermatt-Gstaad-Montreux-Lucerne (which is via Gstaad again)), a lot of backtracking is involved and I don’t think that’s doable. Mind that daylight time is short in December too.

The mountains you mentioned are all great, but I’d consider skipping Glacier3000 as it will improve your schedule for December 23 and is not covered by your pass anyway. The Eurail Global Pass provides less discounts for mountain trips than Swiss rail passes do, that’s true. You could check the validity information at http://www.myswissalps.com/eu railglobalpass/validit y and pick mountains with the best discount rates. For example: Pilatus (http://www.myswissalps.com/pi latus) and Rigi (http://www.myswissalps.com/ri gi) are both 50% off, so that may be more economical.

The simple way to a perfect Swiss trip

Thanks a lot dear anika for your prompt response and that great help. I will skip Gstaad as you said as that sounded too ambitious.

I’d also like to ask If I coud chech my luggage as soon as I arrive at Zurich train station and get it after 5 days in Luzern train station .. it’s for 12 CHF which seems a pretty good deal instead of wandering around with I big piece of luggage.
But Could I do that ? Would I be able to ship it with my eurail global pass ? It says that I could do with a swiss pass or point to point ticket covering the whole route but didn’t mention a eurail pass on sbb site. Do you feel like it’s a good idea to do so ? Thanks so much again.

    Hi Fredy_ramzy5,

Yes, that luggage shipping arrangement should work. There’s a station-to-station shipping service allowing you to collect your luggage after two days: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/practical/luggage. You need a valid train pass or ticket for the shipment route. A Eurail Global Pass that’s valid during the shipment dates should be fine too, as it covers the route Zurich-Lucerne.
