6 days with Swiss Travel Pass: itinerary advice

Short summary – read this first

Tijoscaria is planning a 6-day family trip in Switzerland, staying in Zurich and wanting to explore various destinations using the Swiss Travel Pass. They seek advice on their itinerary, especially regarding mountain trips and combining day trips without incurring extra costs. Their trips include visits to locations like Lucerne, Lauterbrunnen, and the Golden Pass line.

Key takeaways:
  • You can combine a lake boat trip with a visit to Mt. Rigi on the same day, which is popular among travelers.
  • Plan to visit Lucerne for two days to cover both Mt. Rigi and Stanserhorn, where kids can have fun.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass does not cover the lift to Grindelwald First but offers discounts.
  • Ensure to reserve seats for the Glacier Express and Bernina Express in advance, as these come with extra costs.
  • For your Swiss Travel Pass, select a start date upon booking as it will be valid for 6 consecutive days.

What time of the year are you going? That may affect suggestions.

The Lucerne area is a wonderful day trip from Zurich. Once done with Rigi, Old Town Lucerne, which is very close to the train station, is delightful, with restaurants, shops, pedestrian bridges, river walk, etc. If you have time or need to fill another day, I suggest a trip to the Stanserhorn, which is also very close to Lucerne and free with the STP. A nice open air funicular to begin, then a cable car with Open top deck to the top, and a short hiking path around the peak. The restaurant there has a huge outdoor deck and the cafeteria offers all the basics.

Trips to Grindelwald & Lauterbrunnen are going to be at least 5 hours roundtrip on the trains, a little over that for Montreux. OK for adults but the kids might get a bit bored or tired.

The Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne usually has a lot of kids in it and several displays/activities geared towards children. It is discounted, but not free, with the STP.

The STP (Swiss Travel Pass) does not cover the lift up to First, but does give you a discount.

    Hi Tijoscaria,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Looking at your current plans, the Swiss Travel Pass covers everything except for the gondola trip to Grindelwald First. Also you would need to make seat reservations on the Glacier Express and Bernina Express and these cost extra. You can book your seats online up to 3 months in advance (please refer links below for more info).

For more day trip ideas with your Swiss Travel Pass, you can view and download the Swiss Travel Pass validity map here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity

    Hope this helps.

    regards,

    Anna

Thank you for the valuable suggestions.

What time of the year are you going? That may affect suggestions.

I am planning to visit on 28th of august 2023

As you mentioned two days can be allocated to Lucerne area to cover mt Rigi and Stanserhorn. Could you please suggest anything else to include for the first or second day with Swiss Travel Pass during this trip. or any lake boat trip to include second day

And with respect to Trip 4 Golden Pass line (planning direct train from Zurich to Interlaken) then Golden Pass leg from Interlaken to Montreux and return back to Zurich via regular train. Do you have any suggestion during this day drip to explore further.

    Thanks & regards

    Tijo

You can combine a lake boat trip & Rigi on the same day, which I think is how many if not most folks do it. Train from Zurich to Luzern (must use that spelling when checking the SBB timetable), then catch a boat to Vitznau, where you basically walk across the street to catch the train (usually red cars although the newer version cars are dark green I think) going up to Rigi. You can return the same way, or take take a train (blue cars) down the other side (not as scenic) to Arth Goldau and catch a train to Zurich or Luzern. All covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.

I would do Rigi one day and Stanserhorn the second. Rigi will take a bit longer due to boat and slower trains up/down to the top. Stanserhorn is easier to get to, and you’ll have time to explore Old Town Luzern. Old Town Zurich is interesting too, more complex than Luzern, with some magnificent old churches, tucked away courtyards, and small parks.

I haven’t been to Montreux, so I have no sightseeing suggestions. The trip from Zurich incorporating the scenic west end of the Golden Pass route will take 4h 20m to 4h 40m one way, so basically 9 hours on trains for a day trip. That doesn’t leave much time to add in a lot of exploration once in Montreux, Perhaps others will be more helpful.

    Hi Tijo,

Regarding Montreux, you can find activity tips here: http://www.myswissalps.com/montreux/activities.

I agree with CabinJohn, you can combine Rigi or Pilatus with a boat trip: http://www.myswissalps.com/rigi/gettingthere and http://www.myswissalps.com/pilatus/gettingthere. The boat trip on lake Lucerne (http://www.myswissalps.com/boatlakelucerne) will be free with your Swiss Travel Pass. The mountain transport to Pilatus is discounted with your pass.

Please find the validity map and a list of the Swiss Travel Pass here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity.

    Thank you very much CabinJon/Ildiko

On the last day of Switzerland I would like to move from Zurich to Milan , Do you have any suggestions on the rout as I would like to incorporate some part of Glacier and Bernina Express to reach Tirano.

I have planned like this. Zurich to Andermatt (regular speed train)-Andermatt to Chur (Glacier Express)-lay over in Chur some time-Chur to Tirano (Bernina Express). Is this doable /can I able connect trains on time? or do you have any other better routes ?

And one more doubt with respect to Swiss Travel Pass. Should I specify the 6 days at the time of booking? or it will activate from the use of first day continuously till 6th day as my plan was to take 6 days pass.(not flexible )

No experience on going to Italy so I can’t help on that. When we bought our 15 day STPs, we had to specify the start date. It is valid from that date forward until the end of the term, i.e., 15 days or in your case, 6 days.
