I am trying to create a 7 day itinerary for our trip in August. A few things we can not change: We are flying in the morning of day 1 into Zurich and have to finish day 7 in Lugano. There are countless options, but here’s one to consider: from Zurich, travel to Lucerne and via the Golden Pass line to Montreux. Stay a few days and cover Geneva as a day trip from there. Optionally stay in Lucerne or in or near Interlaken for a few days before reaching Montreux. Lucerne might be more suitable if you’re interested in cities. Interlaken is more like a large town with not much sightseeing opportunities in town, but a wonderful region surrounding it. A day trip to Bern is an option from Interlaken.
From Montreux, you can travel to Brig and from there either via Domodossola (Centovalli railway) or via the Glacier Express line (Andermatt or even Brig) to Lugano.
