7-Day solo trip to Bern & Lauterbrunnen in August

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a solo trip to Switzerland from August 20 to August 27. They want advice on their itinerary, which includes stops in Zurich, Lucerne, Bern, and Lauterbrunnen, along with activities like hiking and visiting Jungfraujoch. They are wondering if their plans are too ambitious and if they should adjust their time in different cities.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider spending more nights in Lauterbrunnen and visiting Bern on a day with less favorable weather for outdoor activities.
  • The Swiss Half Fare Card can save you money on transport; compare it with the Jungfrau and Bernese Oberland travel passes based on your planned travel.
  • Enjoy your stay and plan to return for more exploration, as both Lucerne and Lauterbrunnen have plenty to offer.

Hi everyone! I’m taking a solo trip through Switzerland in late August and while I have a rough itinerary sketched out, I’d love to know if it feels too ambitious. For reference, I’m a 31 year old male coming from New York. My budget is flexible so while I’ll mostly do hostels or airbnb’s, I want to spend my money on activities and nature experiences. I land in Zurich Tues, August 20 10AM and leave Zurich the following Tues, August 27 1PM.

    Here’s what I’m thinking:

    • Day 1: land in Zurich, train to Lucerne for 1 night (explore Lucerne, including boat tour of the lake)
    • Day 2: train to Bern for 1 night (explore Bern)
    • Day 3: train to Lauterbrunnen for 4 nights
    • Days 3-6: hike (light, not extreme), skydive and/or paraglide and/or hangglide, visit neighboring towns and mountains such as Murren, Gimmelwald, Wengen, Thun, trip to Jungfraujoch
    • Day 6: train to Zurich for 1 night
    • Day 7: fly out of Zurich

    Here are my biggest questions:

    • For my time in Lauterbrunnen, do you think that all is too ambitious? I believe I’ve seen Jungfraujoch may be an all-day trip, so I want to accomplish as much as possible but be realistic.
    • If it’s not too ambitious, would you recommend I try to do 2 days in Lucerne and 3 in Lauterbrunnen? Or maybe cut out Bern?
    • Is there anything I’m missing that I should absolutely consider?

Would welcome any and all advice. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Zach,

Welcome to MySwissAlps! You could consider spending 5 nights in Lauterbrunnen, and do a day trip to Bern on a day with least favorable weather for mountain activities. It’s only 1h20 by train. You could also visit Thun that day if you think a few hours per city is enough.

I think your plan is realistic, but weather dependent: http://www.myswissalps.com/we ather.

You can’t see it all in 7 days. Both the Lucerne and Lauterbrunnen areas offer enough for weeks, so I’d say enjoy your stay and come back for more if you like it!

    Hi Arno

Thanks so much for your response! I like the idea of doing a day trip to Bern from Lauterbrunnen. I currently have a single hostel at Camping Jungfrau and could look to start it a day earlier and then do a day trip to Bern. I have a friend who recommended Bern but more recommendations are always good food for thought.

Do you think the Half Fare card could be better than the Jungfrau or Bernese Oberland travel passes if I go this route? I’ll continue to read throughout the site, but thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask.

Thanks again. I’m looking forward to it.

Glad to help! The Jungfrau Travel Pass includes a rather limited area. The Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland includes the trains to Bern as well, so that’s an option if you plan to travel enough to break even. You can compare in detail here (do download the maps from the “Where it’s valid” sections):
