St. Gallen accommodation canceled by host and no place to stay

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Pearl is facing a last-minute accommodation crisis for a trip to Saint Gallen, as their host canceled their booking. With non-refundable tickets and limited budget options, Pearl is seeking affordable alternatives, possibly in the GA Travel area, to maximize the use of their Saver Day Passes during their 27-day trip.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider affordable Airbnb options in areas like Rhazuns, which is near a railway station and reasonable for small families.
  • You can use the Saver Day Pass to travel to locations outside Switzerland like Konstanz, but remember that it won't cover local transport in Germany.
  • Look into budget hotels or youth hostels, as these can offer cheaper accommodations than conventional hotels.
  • Clarify tourist tax details with your host, as it's based on the number of guests and typically included in the accommodation price.

    Hello Pearl

Schiggendorf, is small village in the German state of Baden-Wűrttemberg.  It is about ten kilometres north of the German city of Konstanz (called Constance in English.)

I consulted the Baden-Wűrttemberg electronic timetable at  www.bwegt.de/fahrplan.

To get to Konstanz you take the local number 7382 bus from Schiggendorf to Meersburg (Kirche).   As a general rule the 7382 leaves Schiggendorf at 55 minutes past each hour and takes 13 minutes to get to Meersburg Kirche.

From Meersburg Kirche (=Church) you catch the 700 bus bound for Konstanz.  This bus usually departs at 24 minutes past each hour, goes on to the ferry, and takes 41 minutes to get to Konstanz.

At Konstanz you get off at the Bϋrgerbűro.  The station is about 600 metres from the Bϋrgerbűro.  The walk should take about 10 minutes.

Going back to Schiggendorf the 700 bus does depart from outside Konstanz station, stop number one.  As a general rule the 700 bound for RAVENSBURG departs at 45 minutes past each hour,  and reaches Meersburg Kirche at 23 minutes past each hour.

The 7382 bound for Markdorf departs (usually) at 33 minutes past each hour and takes 14 minutes to get to Schiggendorf.  This bus departs from Meersburg (Sparkasse).  That stop is 170 metres from the Kirche/Church.  You will have to ask for directions.

Note that the single fare from Schiggendorf to Konstanz is 6.60 Euros.

if we stay in this area Schiggendorf, perhaps on the day when first Swiss pass is valid, can start from the Swiss border and follow itinerary by first going to st. gallon. assuming that we do the Bernina train route, is it possible to use the same SDP to end up in Hasle Bei Burgdorf instead? what are particularly mean here is that, the return leg of the journey rerouted to Hasle Bei Burgdorf instead of st. Gallen? Could that be possible?

It is not possible to go from Schiggendorf to the Bernina Line and back to Schiggendorf in one day.

Similarly It is not possible to go from Schiggendorf to the Bernina Line and back to Hasle-Ruegsau in one day.

Similarly It is not possible to go from Hasle-Ruegsau to the Bernina Line and back to Hasle-Ruegsau in one day.

Getting from Schiggendorf  to Hasle-Ruegsau, the station for Hasle bei Burgdorf (using your first SDP).

Take the bus to Meersburg, and then the bus to Konstanz Burgerburo.  Then walk to Konstanz station.  You will have plenty of time, as the IR75 train to Zurich departs at 09 minutes past each hour.

The train reaches Zurich in 76 minutes.  The 10 09 therefore reaches Zurich Hauptbahnhof at 11 25.

From Zurich catch the IR35 train bound for BERN.  These trains depart at 53 minutes past each hour and take 72 minutes to get to Burgdorf.  So the 11 53 gets to Burgdorf at 13 05.

At Burgdorf change to an S44 local train bound for Sumiswald-Grűnen.  These trains depart at 11 minutes past each hour and take just 9 minutes to get to Hasle-Rűegsau

    Ideas for trips from Hasle-Rűegsau.

I hope, but cannot promise, to give you ideas tomorrow.  How many SDP days will you have when you get to Hasle-Rűegsau?  It would help to know the exact dates.

    Kind regards

    Roger

    Hi Pearl81,

Your host is legally obligated to collect the tourist tax and submit to their municipality or canton. It’s based per person, per night.  Not all but some will have to share guest details. Best to clarify with your host if you need more details.

Using your Saver Day Pass on the specified date, you can travel everywhere within the validity map, so if you chose to travel to Hasle bei Burgdorf you could, or if you chose to travel to Lausanne, you could. When you have a moment, perhaps take a look at the validity map, that way you can see where you can travel to/from.

From Hasle bei Burgdorf to Andermatt, is already a 3 hour 41 minute train journey (with changes).  Personally, I think it would be too much to then commence the Glacier Express section but it’s personal, maybe you would be Ok to do this?

I recommend you use the Swiss timetable to research your trips.  Thereon you gauge what is doable for yourselves. Here’s the link:

To view snow when you are here, your best bet is either Titlis, Jungfraujoch or Zermatt.

Constance and Konstanz are both the same.  Constance is the english name, Konstanz the german name 🙂

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda

    Greetings Roger,
unfortunately, I still have not Heard back about the accommodation, now there is two days left in Starting the first leg of the journey, and I am still dealing with a place to stay. This last-minute cancellation of the trip by the host has created These complex difficulties at the time when I should have been  packed up and at ease.
Anyways, I am quite much impressed by your mastery of regional knowledge of German side And your ability to get the minute details, very much appreciated, and respected.
I thought it would be nice to go on the first SDP to Hasle Bei Burgdorf Such that It could be used also to do either part of the itineraries , you mentioned. As you said, also, it really seems section of Bernina cannot be done.
However, it seems that section of GE Can be done. Since  I am not at the computer, It is difficult to write here But obviously, the journey is very long and by the time one reaches Hasle Bei Burgdorf, It is already about 21:00. One just has to be very careful to not miss the last train, Otherwise, the next trains are next day in the morning thus SDP Cannot be used anymore.

The bad news is that I still do not have a confirmation from the host in Hasle Bei Burgdorf. So at this moment, I just don’t know what to do because the first leg of journey Just starts Very soon. It seems that I shall be doing and continue to searching for accommodation, while travelling.

    Hello Yolanda,

I exactly thought the same and shared the concern with the host already But I do not understand why the host still believes that there Are no tourist taxes needed. When I insisted, they said that even if they are, they are quite small And they are included in the bill already. However, they are not mentioned separately in the bill. Even if they have to pay later, The responsibility lies on the host, then? to whom are the consequences of this if host does not pay the tourist tax?

Furthermore, thanks a lot for the Suggestions about suno in summer. Which one of these is free That can be done from SDP? From previous threats, I understood its Stansenhorn? But I think there will be no snow there.
Jungfrau Seems incredible, but does it cost extra?
If it cost extra, which would be the cheapest one. I was wondering to use the entire SDP To get to some mountain to experience snow in summer, that does not include anything extra to pay and thus using the same SDP to come back to the accommodation, Assuming that the accommodation is either in Hasle Bei Burgdorf or somewhere close to Constance. The bad news, however, is that yet there is no accommodation booked. Now  starting the first leg of the journey And I, guess most of my time will now be spent on figuring out and accommodation.

    Hello Pearl

Here is a circular trip you could make on an SDP while based at Hasle bei Burgdorf.

    07  38 S41 Hasle-Ruegsau to Thun, arrive 08 19.

    08 27 IC8 Thun to Brig arrive 09 13

    09 23 R43 Brig to Andermatt arrive 11 20

    11 28 R45  Andermatt to Disentis arrive 12 39

    Across the platform to the

    12 44 RE7 to Chur arrive 14 02

    14  11 IR35 to Bern via Zurich arrive Burgdorf at 17 05

    17 11 S44 bound for Sumiswald-Grunen.  Arrive Hasle Ruegsau at 17 20.

That is seven trains in nearly 10 hours of continuous travelling.

However all the trains I have listed run every hour.  So you could take a break somewhere.  I would suggest have lunch at Disentis, and leave Disentis at 13 44.  All the timings after Disentis would then be an hour later.

    Best wishes

    Roger

Hello Roger, that’s an excellent suggestion, many thanks. The one I thought would have taken late night to return but you demonstrated it is possible in short span of time. Will note it down. There is currently no time to print so I save that in my notes.

if I hear back from the host and if my accommodation is confirmed in Hasle Bei Burgdorf, then it would mean that there would be one SDP that would be used to get there from Constance (assuming I get an accommodation there), and with four days gap one SDP while in Hasle Bei Burgdorf, and again after one day another SDP. Now it depends on answer from host About the exact Days that we Can rent, the accommodation. that makes it very complicated, unfortunately at this point. however, when the accommodation is confirmed, these things become clearer.
I initially thought that I use SDPS such that they could be used to get from Constance to Hasle Bei Burgdorf and back, but in such a way that they combined not only the journey, but at least one leg in the daytime a scenic journey that require some creativity.

In one of the SDPs You had suggested Mount Rigi.  it would be nice to go to a mountain where to experience snow in summer. I heard that there are some free ones also. we just have to check where will be based at that time. Perhaps that can be done in the last SDP in July, Just before our return journey soon after. Snow in summer would create a contrast.

Rothernhorn train from Hasle Bei Burgdorf, I thought could have been possible, but I’m not sure if it is worth it. They are places like Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald. As we talked elsewhere It is perhaps more soothing  to explore The areas which are equally beautiful But yet, not overcrowded.

    Hello Pearl

To experience Snow in summer in Switzerland you nowadays have to go up to an altitude of about 3,000 metres above sea level.   (Nearly 10,000 feet above sea level.)  Unfortunately Rigi and Stanserhorn, both of which can be reached with a Saver Day Pass, are slightly less than 2,000 metres above sea level.

    KInd regards

    Hi Pearl81,

Indeed, your accommodation situation is taking much time.  I really hope it all sorts itself out.

You can read about a visit to Jungfraujoch or Mt. Titlis in our guides below. Prices of these visits are also listed. Mt. Titlis is considered to be a cheaper visit. Unfortunately with a Saver Day Pass, there are no discounts to reach the respective summits.  Jungfraujoch, you could travel as far as Grindelwald or Wengen only.  Mt.Titlis, travel to Engelberg only (base of Mt. Titlis).

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda
