Best Swiss Christmas market in 2021

Short summary – read this first

Tom is excited about his upcoming trip to Switzerland this December, where he'll stay in Unterseen and Interlaken for two weeks. He wants to visit several Christmas fairs in cities like Bern, Thun, and Luzern, and is looking for recommendations on the best ones to check out during his visit, especially since he will have a Swiss Travel Pass to travel easily.

Key takeaways:
  • Visit the Christmas market in Montreux as it is highly recommended by other travelers.
  • The Basel Christmas market is also worth your time, being one of the largest in Switzerland.
  • Consider checking out the Christmas fair in Colmar, France, which is near Basel, but be prepared for crowds, especially on weekends.
  • Use the Golden Pass train from Interlaken to Montreux for stunning views along the way.

I finally have managed to be in Switzerland this December (2021) staying in Unterseen and Interlaken. What I really want to do this trip is visit some of the various Christmas Fairs in Bern, Thun, Interlaken, Luzern and maybe Lauterbrunnen and Grindenwald. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on which Christmas Fair they considered their favorite, or the best, to visit. I have two weeks starting in mid December thru December 28th before I have to go to England. I’ll have a Swiss Travel Pass so getting around shouldn’t be a problem. Was wondering if Davos, St Moritz, Zermatt or some of the larger cities like Zurich, Basel or Geneva might have Christmas Fairs worth visiting. All comments and suggestions are welcome. Tom

    Hi Tom,

first of all thank you for the lovely pictures! Feel free to share more thoughts/experiences regarding your previous Swiss holiday in the Trip Reviews part of this forum (http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/tripreports). We would be happy to read more about it.

Now back to the Christmas markets; I am a huge fan of them and I believe that one of the best is in Montreux. The one in Basel is huge and also worth visiting. The Christmas Fair in Bern is OK, but nothing special in my opinion.

Here you can read more about the Chrismas markets (dates will be refreshed for 2021 once they will be announced): http://www.myswissalps.com/activities/christmasmarkets

I’ve heard that the Christmas market in Colmar (France, pretty close to Basel) is amazing too, although I haven’t been there yet as I also heard that it can be super crowded (especially on weekends).

lldiko – Thank you for your suggestions for Xmas Markets – have you any thoughts on any ones in Zurich please.

Isn’t it marvellous that we are starting to plan future trips – albeit with a little bit of caution.

To me Zurich is too busy to really enjoy the location. I’m more of a Lauterbrunnen, Interlaken, Thun and Bern kind of traveler.

Thank you for your response, suggestions and the links to related posts. Always useful. We’re renting a house in Unterseen so getting to Montreux, Chur, Zermatt, etc…. shouldn’t be too much trouble. We’ll be there for two weeks and I’d like to visit as many different Christmas Fairs as possible. Thanks again.

    Hi Tom,

from Interlaken to Montreux you can travel on the Golden Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass) if you like panoramic trains.

Have a look at that trip report, I’ve just mentioned, I guess it will be useful for you too: http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/maggies-december-trip-report.

    Take care,

    Ildiko
