Short summary – read this first

Cristina is planning a family trip to Brienz in early June, staying for about 6 days and visiting Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Lugano, and Lucerne. She needs advice on whether renting a car or taking the train would be more economical for her family, which includes her husband and two young children. The community offers helpful suggestions for transportation options and passes.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider taking the train instead of renting a car, as the Swiss train system is reliable, comfortable, and easy to use.
  • For your 1 year old, travel is free, and you can get a Swiss Family Card for your 6 year old, allowing her free travel on public transport.
  • Evaluate different rail passes like the Jungfrau Travel Pass or the Swiss Travel Pass based on your itinerary to find the best option for your family.
  • Use a cost calculation spreadsheet provided in the forum to help you decide between renting a car and taking the train.

    Hello Everyone!

My family and I are planning a trip for early June. We are planning on staying in Brienz for about 6 days and are planning to visit Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Lugano, and Lucerne. We will be arriving in Zurich. We are trying to decide if it’s less expensive to rent a car or take the train? It’ll be my husband and I, my 6 year old, and 1 year old. Thank you all so much in advance! I really appreciate it!

    Cristina
