Hi. We will be traveling on the Golden Pass route from Lucerne to Montreux on Nov 3. I planned to go to Chamonix on the 4th. We have an 8. Day Swiss travel pass. I was going to go to Milan for the last night before heading to Venice. People have told me to go to Zermatt instead and catch the Zermatt _Brig-Venice train instead and skip Milan! Is this a good idea?

Sounds like a good idea to me. Chamonix is in France, Zermatt is in Switzerland. Need I say more? 😉

Unless you have more time for Milan, then the comparison is between Zermatt and Chamonix, as to which this board definitely leans toward the former. Mt Blanc vs Matterhorn = Massive, shapeless blob that can’t be seen properly from Chamonix vs the quintessential Alpine peak?

Chamonix is not all that easy to reach (transport logistics F not quite as efficient as CH) and is on the ‘edge’ of your route, so Zermatt would be better from that point of view.

Physically, you won’t skip Milano (Milan) anyway, because starting from Switzerland the rail route to Venezia (Venice) is via Milano

    Hi NTL-

    <<“Massive, shapeless blob “>>

    Nicely phrased, if not subtle.

However, Mont Blanc is nice to view from the shoreline restaurants in Geneva, especially:

    and,

Overpriced, but nice views on clear days.

Rochers de Naye is ideal. spectacular scenery on the mountain itself and wonderful views of the Alpine chain to the south

    Hi Zyla,

What a good problem to have – I would agree with the previous comments that Zermatt is the way to go!

thank you everyone. I will stay in Zermatt. I booked a room at the Hotel Garni Testa Grigia . It is supposed to be nice and near the train station. I can’t believe that the rooms are almost sold out in this town.

    Hi Zyla-

<<“I can’t believe that the rooms are almost sold out in this town”>>

Probably, it is because many hotels have closed for the between seasons break.

Possibly, but much less probable, a zillion skiers have all shown up for one last good chance at skiing, before the snow is no good.

Hope it works out well for you!
