Chamonix to Zermatt and beyond

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip arriving in Geneva and traveling to Chamonix, Zermatt, Lauterbrunnen, and ending in Munich over a week. They need help figuring out train travel from Chamonix to Zermatt and whether their Swiss Half Fare Card will work for this leg. They're also looking to visit Gornergrat and Schilthorn, depending on the weather.

Key takeaways:
  • The Swiss Half Fare Card is valid from Châtelard-Frontière to Zermatt, reducing your ticket price to CHF 40 one way.
  • The ticket cost from Chamonix to Martigny is likely affordable but please check specific prices.
  • You can print the Swiss Half Fare Card at home, and it can be received via email in 1 to 3 business days.

Hi all! First off, here is my itinerary:

11/19 arrive Geneva, take EasyBus to Chamonix

11/21 Chamonx to Zermatt by train (this is where i need help)

11/24 Zermatt to Lauterbrunnen by train

11/25 Lauterbrunnen to Munich by train

We also hope to visit Gornergrat and Schilthorn as day trips if the weather cooperates.

Ive researched train tickets and passes extensively and decided on the half fare card.

I can’t seem to find much info on the Chamonix – Zermatt portion. Is the half fare card valid? What is the cost of the ticket from Chamonix to Martigny?

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi msdama,

The Swiss Half Fare Card map shows where it’s valid. In your case it’s from the border (Le Châtelard-Frontière) to Zermatt. That portion will cost you CHF 40 one way (normally CHF 80). I don’t know the price of the French portion but I don’t think it’s that much.

You can print the Swiss Half Fare Card at home through http://www.swissrailways.com/ en. It takes 1 to 3 business days to receive it through e-mail.
