This may sound like a stupid question and there have been many questions about this . I gather there are different “rail” stations in Grindelwald like Grindelwald first , Grindelwald Grund, Grindelwald Terminal, Grindelwald Bahnhof, Grindelwald …. My confusion is the Grindelwald Terminal, Grindelwald, Grindelwald Bahnhof…

So from Interlaken to Grindelwald , which train station is the right station to stop at ? 😀

The BOB railway from Interlaken terminates at Grindelwald. (Away from a couple of major cities, the main station in a town is usually just called by the name of the town).

As part of the Eiger Express project a new multi-modal station was built which is called Grindelwald Terminal.

    Hi Sewcheck,

In Grindelwald there are various stations bearing that name and I can understand your confusion.

If you’re travelling by train, the main station would be just Grindelwald. If you are taking a bus, it’s Grindelwald Bahnhof (bus station). If you’re travelling with the Eiger Express, the station is called Grindelwald Terminal. These are the three that you should be able to differentiate.

So grateful for the clarification, Anna.

Just one last question on this – so coming from interlaken and when we reach Zermatt , is Grindelwald the first station stop ? 🙏

    Hi Sew Check,

This got me a little confused. If you’re travelling from Interlaken to Zermatt, you will not be passing through Grindelwald at all. Assuming you are taking the fastest connection, you will have to change trains in Spiez and Visp.

You can check train schedules here: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

In Zermatt, you can take a cogwheel train up to Gornergrat. The Gornergrat base station is located directly opposite the Zermatt train station.

The train will first reach Grindelwald Terminal, and then Grindelwald a few minutes later. That’s where the train ends.

    Enjoy the ride!

    Hi Sewcheck,

    Ok, that makes sense.

From Interlaken to Grindelwald – If you’re travelling from Interlaken West, you will need to change trains in Interlaken Ost. From Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald, the service is direct. The train will terminate in Grindelwald. The same train will stop at Grindelwald Terminal which is the stop before Grindelwald. Be sure to get down at the last stop.

    Hope this clarifies.

    regards,

    Anna

When traveling from Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald be sure to get on the correct end of the train. That’s because the train splits at Zweilütschinen with half of it continuing on to Grindelwald and the other half terminating in Lauterbrunnen. How is THAT for confusing! It’s actually pretty straightforward as the cars are marked as is the station platform. You just have to be heads up about it and know to look for the signage. If there is any confusion just ask train staff that will be keeping watch at the platform.

Thank you kim11 for that tip.

Yes, usually there is a member of staff advising passengers, which ‘train’ is heading where.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

As a further back-up announcements are made on the trains at Zweilütschinen, where the train divides. They tell you where your part of the train is going, i.e. Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen.

The advice if you’re in the wrong portion is “Please change to the connecting train”. I’m easily amused and smile at that. Perhaps it should be ‘`dis-connecting’.

That’s right Andrew – thank you. Announcements are made in addition to the member of staff directing the passengers on the platform.

I am with you, with your remark 😉

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
