Day trip to Zermatt from Montreux – what can I do

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a day trip to Zermatt from Montreux in the first week of October. They want to visit Gornergrat and the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise but are uncertain about the timing and whether both are feasible within their schedule. This traveler is seeking tips on how much time to allocate for each location while managing travel time.

Key takeaways:
  • Check the SBB timetable to plan your trip better, as it includes both Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn timings.
  • Allocate at least one hour at each location and consider spending an additional hour in Zermatt itself.
  • If you're not hiking, it may be best to skip Sunnegga since you won’t have enough time to visit Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn.

Possible but could be a long day. I don;t know how much stamina you have.

Check the SBB Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to see if the length of the round trip plus the excursions is something you want to undertake.

You might want to consider just Gornergrat.

That’s why I said to check the timetable. The SBB timetable includes both Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn (aka Matterhorn Glacier Paradise) from Zermatt.

Well at a minimum I would allow 1 hour at each plus 1 hour to explore Zermatt seeing you are there.

That’s a funicular station up the mountain. Usually it’s where people start/end a hike, but you can also simply enjoy the good view of the Matterhorn from there.

I think you’ll barely have time during your day to do Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn – I’d skip Sunnegga. If you aren’t hiking around there then it is “just” another view of the Matterhorn.
