Short summary – read this first

John KS Ung is planning a one-day trip to Zermatt from Interlaken on June 2, 2024, and seeks advice on what to do given their limited time. He wants to know if Saturday or Sunday is better for the visit, whether to take the Gornergrat railway, and if pre-booking tickets is necessary.

Key takeaways:
  • Choose the day with the best weather forecast for your visit to enjoy the views.
  • Taking the Gornergrat railway offers stunning views of the Matterhorn; it's worth the trip!
  • Consider hiking from Rotenboden to Riffelsee for beautiful reflections of the Matterhorn.

We plan to do a one day trip to Zermatt from Interlaken on 2 June 2024

What are the best things to do in Zermatt, considering the limited time we have?

    1. Should we visit Zermat on Saturday or Sunday?

    2. Should we consider taking the Gornergrat railway upto the top?

    3. Is there any stop on the way that we should consider?

    4. Should we pre–book the ticket for the Gornergrat train?

Thanks for your helpJohn KS Ung

    Hi John,

That’s great you are thinking of visiting Zermatt.

    In answer to your questions:

    1. I don’t think there is a ‘better’ day to visit in this regard.  What would be important is the weather.  I’d choose the day with the better weather forecast as you are taking a mountain excursion, you’d definitely want to appreciate the views whilst there.  All about the weather forecast here:  https://www.myswissalps.com/planning/practical/weather/forecast/
    2.  Yes.  With favourable weather, you’ll enjoy some amazing views of the Matterhorn.  All about a visit to Gornergrat in the attached link: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/gornergrat/.  If you enjoy walking, there are some pleasant hikes here that maybe accessible when you visit.
    3. Many opt to alight at Rotenboden and walk to Riffelsee.  With good weather, you can witness the Matterhorn reflection in all its splendour 🙂 https://www.myswissalps.com/blog/hike-rotenboden-riffelalp/
    4. I would not pre-book your tickets till nearer the time.  As mentioned, best to visit when you know the weather is going to be fine.

Your journey to Zermatt itself will take over two hours, so I’d set off early to make the most of your time there.  Do use the Swiss timetable so you can plan your schedule.  https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/.
