Driving from Lauterbrunnen to Zermatt

Short summary – read this first

Shubham and his family are traveling from Germany to Lauterbrunnen, planning a visit to Zermatt on December 23. They want to know about the road conditions and driving difficulty due to possible snow on the route, especially since they are not experienced in driving on snowy roads.

Key takeaways:
  • Check the latest traffic and weather updates before your trip to ensure safe driving conditions.
  • Use the Lötchberg car train for the most efficient route to Zermatt, as it offers a convenient way to cross between Kandersteg and Goppenstein.
  • Drive slowly during potential snowfall, especially since Täsсh is at a higher elevation and conditions can change rapidly.

    Hi,

We are a group of 5 adults (Me , my wife, her parents and her sister). We are coming from Germany and will be staying at Lauterbrunnen. I am planning to visit to Zermatt. We are coming by car. I know that Zermatt is a car-free zone and I need to park at Täsch and then take a train to Zermatt. I also looked for trains from Lauterbrunnen till Zermatt but for five people, it is very costly. I want to know, whether the route from Lauterbrunnen till Zermatt will be covered with snow and is it difficult for people to drive there, if I have not driven on very snowy roads ?

I saw some thread, where it is mentioned that at Kanderstag, the road is a bit tricky. Any help or advice is highly appreciated.

I have winter tires in my car and have also bought snow chains.

    Thanks,

    Shubham

    Hi Shubham,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps!

Before starting your journey, I would recommend reading these useful links if you are intent on driving in Switzerland:

Driving to Zermatt involves the Lötschberg car train. For details, see this: http://www.myswissalps.com/car/cartrains.

As you are well aware, Zermatt is a car-free village and it is possible to drive only as far as Täsch. There’s a parking garage called the Matterhorn Terminal next to the train station: http://www.zermatt.ch/en/arrival/mtt

I’m not too sure about the current road condition to Täsch. There may be disruptions if it snows heavily. My advice would be to check the latest traffic info and the weather forecast before you begin your travel.

    Safe journey and happy holidays.

    Anna

OK. As Anna says, the best route is through Kandersteg, Goppenstein, and Brig. Between Kandersteg and Goppenstein you put your car on a train (ne booking required, frequent trains). The road should be cleared, and you have chains, but probably won’t need them. That would be Google Map’s first (and only) suggestion. The travel duration is around 2 hrs and a half.

Should you for any reason want to avoid the car-train solution, you would have to turn around the Bernese Alps, via Bern, Fribourg, Montreux, Sion. The trip would last 3 hours and a half, mostly on motorways, also clear of snow.

Weather forecasts ae available for Dec. 23: heavy rains (so add time to the driving estimates), snow possible above 700 m elevation (Täsch is at 1450 m…). Still, the road should be cleared, but you should drive slowly during snowfalls. Too bad that you feel the train is too costly!

Tell us how it went! It snowed more than I thought pn Dec. 23rd, and some roads were closed because of avalanches. Give us some feedback if you have a chance!
