Exploring Zermatt with family, 3 days in mid May

Short summary – read this first

Manish is traveling to Zermatt with his family in mid-May for three days. He has a rough itinerary that includes visiting Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and Gornergrat but wonders if he can add more attractions and if activities like tobogganing are safe for his kids. He also seeks advice on appropriate footwear for their stay.

Key takeaways:
  • Check if the Matterhorn Express gondola is operational before your visit, as it might be closed in May.
  • The toboggan run at Rotenboden only operates during winter, so verify its availability beforehand.
  • Consider visiting nearby towns like Randa and Tasch for additional sightseeing options.
  • Normal trekking shoes should be sufficient for Zermatt, but ensure they are comfortable for hiking.

    Hi All,

I am travelling to Switzerland in Mid May and would be staying in Zermatt for three days with family. We are 5 adults and 2 kids of age 6 and 11. I have been searching around the internet and made a rough list of places to visit during the stay at Zermatt.

    1. Matterhorn Glacier Paradise:

From Matterhorn head to Furi. Do a short hike to Furi Suspension bridge.

Furi to Schwarzee : Visit the lake at Schwarzee.

Schwarzee to Trockener Steg to the Summit : Visit the Ice Palace and the Viewing Platform.

    2. Gornorgrat Round Trip

From Zermatt take the funiculur to Gornergrat Bahn. The stations on the way are :

Riffelalp : Could not find anything in particular to explore.

Riffelberg: Again could not find anything particular to explore.

Rotenboden: Visit Lake Riffelsee. When coming backuse the toboggan to reach Riffelberg.

    3. Visit the Zermatt Museum / Village Tour

Can I fit in anything else in the 3 days itinerary ?

Also Is the toboggan from Rotenboden safe for kids of age 6? Do they provide safety equipments there?

Also what kind of shoes should I take to Zermatt? Will normal trekking shoes do the job?

    Cheers !

    Manish

    Hi Manish,

For the trip to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise: The route via Furi and Trockener Steg is available all year round. The alternative route via Schwarzsee is available during winter and from early July to mid- or late August. So you might not be able to visit Schwarzsee in mid-May.

For the round trip to Gornergrat: The toboggan run is a winter activity on Rotenboden and may no longer be running in mid-May. You can find other activities on Gornergrat here: http://www.myswissalps.com/gornergrat

In addition to the Zermatt village walk, I recommend visiting the neighbouring towns of Randa and Tasch. You can also do day trips to Brig or Montreux. You can plan your journey using the SBB timetable. More sightseeing options here: http://www.myswissalps.com/zermatt/activities

Hope this helps you plan your itinerary.

    Regards,

    Anna

I am sorry to say that ‘mid-may’ is not the best time to visit Zermatt, as the village and mountain lift operators have a bit of a rest between the busy winter (ski) season and the summer. Winter activities and attractions have ended and summer attractions have not opened up – as you can see from the following facts:

In particular, the Matterhorn Express gondola cable car is closed for the whole of May so you can’t get to Schwarzsee by mechanical means. The ‘Sunegga/Rothorn‘ lifts are also closed for the whole of May.

The ‘toboggan’ run at Rotenboden to Riffelberg is a pure snow toboggan run so that does not operate after mid-April

A ‘summer attraction, the fabulous Gorner Gorge is not open until the very end of May

The village is quite small so once you have ‘toured’ it once there is not much else.
