Short summary – read this first

A traveler has a busy day planned traveling from Lucerne to Interlaken, hoping to visit Harder Kulm and take a Lake Thun boat tour. They're unsure if this schedule is doable and how long the boat tour will take. They also plan to spend half a day in Bern and want advice on how to manage their time efficiently while exploring key sites.

Key takeaways:
  • The Lake Thun boat tour from Interlaken West to Thun takes about 2 hours, but you can hop off at various stops for additional sightseeing.
  • For a half-day in Bern, visiting the Clock Tower, Bear Park, Parliament building, and Rose Garden is manageable as they are all close to each other.
  • If you need to travel from Thun back to Interlaken, replacement buses will be available while train work is ongoing.
  • Consider getting a Swiss Travel Pass for convenient travel around Switzerland.

    One day:

Travel from Lucerne to Interlaken in the AM, and do Harder Kulm, then Lake Thun boat tour in the afternoon

Question: is this feasible? How long is the Lake Thun boat tour? Is the roundtrip 2 hours taking you back to Interlaken West station?

    —————–

    Another day:

Travel from Interlaken to Bern spend 1/2 day, then head to Zurich in the afternoon

Question: how would you spend 1/2 day in Bern without rushing? I was thinking of visiting: Bundeshaus, Zytglogge, Bern Cathedral, Rose Garden. Should I narrow it down more?

    Thanks

    Hi orangej,

Trip on One Day is feasible. Morning – excursion to Harder Kulm, afternoon – boat trip on Lake Thun. The boat trip from Interlaken West to Thun takes about 2 hours. But you have the option to get off at any station along the route or combined the boat trip with side trips along the route. For instance you can leave the boat at St Beatus Hohlen and visit the St Beatus’ Cave. Then catch a bus to Thun, then train to Lucerne or back to Interlaken. You can find more options here: http://www.myswissalps.com/boatlakethun

Trip on Another Day: Morning – Bern, afternoon – Zurich. This is also feasible. You can find sightseeing suggestions in Bern here: http://www.myswissalps.com/bern/activities. In my opinion, half a day is more than enough time to explore Bern old town and visit the Clock Tower, Bear Park , the Parliament building and the Rose Garden. These are all easily accessible on foot and trams from the town centre.

I hope this helps in your trip planning.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi Anna,

Thanks for the feedback! Due to the trains not running in Interlaken (in April), can I bus from Thun back to Interlaken West?

I also plan to spend one day in Grindelwald – trottibike from Bort. Will the path be clear end of April (unsure if there is snow or closures)? What else do you recommend to do in Grindelwald after trottibike. Is there time to do First Cliff Walk?

    Thank you,

    Stephanie

    Hello Stephanie,

Yes, replacement buses will be operating on this route whilst engineering works are taking place. Do keep tabs on the timetable for latest information.

For more activities in the Grindelwald area, see here:

The Trottibike season opens 1 May till 5 November, 2023 so unfortunately you will need to find an alternative. Do you like hiking, perhaps try hiking along one of the open paths. That said, April weather can be unpredictable so it’s best to check with the local tourist office to see which of the trails will be open.

Yes, the Cliff Walk will be doable, more information on getting there here:

    I hope this helps,
    Yolanda

PS. How are you planning to travel around? Perhaps have a look at the rail passes available here: https://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses

    Hi Yolanda,

Oh no, that’s unfortunate as I really wanted to do the trottibike. Where can I find this information about its opening season? When I looked on Google, the updates for First Trottibike said “see you in April 2023”. So should it be open in April?

I hope First is open in April, how do I get in touch with the office to find out which trails are open?

I plan on getting the Swiss Travel Pass for transportation.

    Thanks,

    Stephanie

    Hello again Stephanie,

Reaching First will not be a problem, the gondolas to First are in operation till 29 October this year. There is a break from 30 October to 8 December but this will not affect your plans. More information here: https://www.myswissalps.com/grindelwaldfirst/gettingthere

Regarding the trottibike dates, information was found here: https://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/grindelwaldfirst/trottibike-scooter/

You can always try emailing them or just keep tabs on the website if things change.

In case you need more information on the Swiss Travel Pass, you can click here.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi Yolanda,

Thanks for the information! It seems like April is still cold and snowy in Grindelwald and many trails are not open until May. I’m trying to figure out other places to check out besides First. Do you recommend visiting the village (is it called Eiger?) and walking to the Glacier Canyon – will those be open and better during this time of year?

    Thank you

    Hi Stephanie,

You can visit Grindelwald village all year round. The Glacier Canyon is currently closed until May. From Grindelwald you can also do day trips to Wengen, Mürren and Lauterbrunnen.
