Hi! We’ll be staying in Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen for 6 nights total. We’re big hikers and plan to do some of the major trails, but are hoping to only use the gondolas down on those (mostly because of cost of a round trip ticket). We just figure that since we’ll only be there a few days, it might not make sense to pay for a travel pass. So, question is, what are some recommended hikes in the region that do NOT require a gondola? We’re open to any distance or difficulty.

Hi Sarah,

The valley walk to Stechelberg is very nice: http://www.myswissalps.com/hi king/lauterbrunnen-stechelberg. This one is nice as well: http://www.myswissalps.com/hi king/wilderswil-zweiluetschinen. But it can’t be compared to walking higher up in the mountains, where you get the best views. Walking up is possible, but you need to be a pretty good hiker to have the stamina for that. One hike that comes to mind is hiking up from Grindelwald to Alpiglen, then taking the train back down (assuming you’ll be there in summer or early fall). I don’t know how scenic it is there at the moment, as they are constructing a new cable car.

A pass could definitely be be worth it for 6 nights. I am quite sure most people do buy a pass if they stay for almost a week.
