Grindelwald, Pfingstegg, Lauterbrunnen, Wengen

Short summary – read this first

A family of three is planning to visit Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and Wengen on June 15th, and they've already bought a 5-day Swiss Travel Pass. They need advice on the best transport options to cover all three locations in one day from their stay in Bern, while considering the cable car to Pfingstegg which is partially covered by the pass.

Key takeaways:
  • You can reach Grindelwald from Bern in about 1.5 hours with one train change at Interlaken Ost.
  • With the Swiss Travel Pass, you'll travel for free on trains to Grindelwald or Wengen, but the cable car to Pfingstegg is only discounted.
  • Consider visiting Grindelwald then taking the cable car to Pfingstegg for summer activities before heading to Lauterbrunnen and Wengen.

    Hello!

We are a family of three and had already purchase 5days swiss pass. We would like to visit the 3 cities above (including to have summer activity pfingstegg in grindewald) on 15th June. Is it possible to cover all in a day? We are staying in Bern. I think we have to go from Bern to Interlaken first to reach there 3 cities.

Any straighforward guidance on the transport wise? We are checking in google, it says there is a cable car from Grindelwald to reach the Pfingstegg but it is covered only 50% by swiss pass?

What is the easiest to cover these 3 beautiful cities? If we would like to have the pfingstegg ride, i believe we have to go grindelwald first then followed with the other 2 cities?

    Appreciate any kind advices! 😀

<removed by moderator>: the locations in the Jungfrau area are either small towns (Grindelwald) or villages ( Lauterbrunnen, Wengen).

The Swiss Travel Pass gives free travel on all main line railway routes and main bus services. It usually gives a discount only (not free) on cable ways to high mountain outposts such as First and Pfingstegg.

You can reach Grindelwald from Bern in about 1.5 hours with one change of train at Interlaken Ost

Sincere apologies for the wrong word to use. this is my first time going to to Swiss. Will take note of it and will be more careful in using the word in the future.

    Thank you for the reply.

May i check will it be wise if we start from Bern – Interlaken OST – Grindelwald – Pfingstegg – Wengen – Lauterbrunnen – Interlaken – Bern?

May i check should i go from Pfingstegg to Wengen first or should i go from Pfingstegg to Lauterbrunnen first? I understand i need to go down to Grindelwald again from Pfingstegg in order to reach Wengen/Lauterbrunnen.

You have a choice. With a Swiss Travel Pass one route will be free apart from the Pfingstegg cableway, the other will be 25% discount only between Grindelwald and Wengen. The traditional way to see the area in 1 day is to go from Interlaken to Grindelwald then on the WAB railway (green and yellow trains) to Wengen and Lauterbrunnen via Kleine Scheidegg (or VICE VERSA)

    The route choice is :

    1) Bern – Interlaken OST – Grindelwald – Pfingstegg – Grindelwald – Zweilutschinen – Lauterbrunnen – Wengen – Lauterbrunnen – Interlaken Ost – Bern

    OR

    2) Bern – Interlaken OST – Grindelwald – Pfingstegg – Grindelwald – Kleine Scheidegg – Wengen – Lauterbrunnen – Interlaken Ost – Bern

On option 2 you will have to pay some money for a discounted ticket Grindelwald – Kleine Scheidegg – Wengen

Finally just to help you along with the linguistics – the country is Switzerland. Something belonging to that country is Swiss. For example you can say “I am visiting Switzerland. when I stay in Switzerland I will see some Swiss cows and some Swiss cheese”

The word city is not unique to Switzerland, here is an English definition:

    Hi Annelicious,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Yes, I think it’s possible to visit Grindelwald, Pfingstegg, Lauterbrunnen and Wengen in one day. Check out this one-day trip which covers all these destinations and give you a quick introduction of the Jungfrau region: http://www.myswissalps.com/onedayjungfrauregion. You can break your journey in Grindelwald and take the cable car to Pfingstegg to ride the toboggan and enjoy other activities. Details on how to get to Pfingstegg: http://www.myswissalps.com/pfingstegg/gettingthere

The following information might also be useful for your trip:

There are regular train services between Bern and Interlaken. From Interlaken you can find direct trains to Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen. Please use the SBB timetable to check train schedules: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

With the Swiss Travel Pass, you can travel for free on the train up to Grindelwald or Wengen. The cable car to Pfingstegg is discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass: http://www.myswissalps.com/pfingstegg/tickets. You can view and download the Swiss Travel Pass validity map here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity

Hope this helps in your trip planning.

    Regards,

    Anna

You might also consider taking the cable cars from Grindelwald to Wengen instead of the train.you, will change cable cars at Mannlichen. The cable car gives a very scenic view of Grindelwald valley. I think for an even more memorable experience I would suggest taking the cable car from Grindelwald to Mannlichen then walking to Kleine Scheidegg before taking the train from Kleine Scheidegg to Wengen. The trail is very easy (wide, slightly down hill, and takes about 1.5 hrs ). It gives a beautiful view of the valley, Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau peaks. Also look at the Royal Walk at Mannlichen.

As far as visiting Wengen and Lauterbrunnen are concerned, to me there is very little to see except the views. At Lauterbrunnen you might take a short walk down Lauterbrunnen valley and spend little if any time in the town.
