Sinead and her husband are visiting Switzerland at the end of June, staying in Zermatt for the weekend. They're looking for the best and most economical train tickets for their journey from either Zurich or Geneva airports to Zermatt. They’ve realized that they will need to change trains and are seeking advice on train options and whether a Swiss Travel Pass is necessary.
Hello, I’d be very grateful for any local knowledge into the best train tickets I should buy.
My husband and I are travelling to Switzerland at the end of June (arrive Saturday morning and leave Monday evening). We have booked a hotel in Zermatt and would like to buy the most economical train tickets to travel there. We won’t have time to visit any other places in Switzerland and will spend the whole trip in Zermatt. We can fly into either Zurich or Geneva airports.
Or for more flexibility a Saver Day Pass, a kind of overall pass for Switzerland for one day. – http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass Check exact validity in the according section.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I will look through all the links you’ve added and see what I can find. Am I right in thinking we can get a direct train to Zermatt from both Zurich and Geneva airports? Is there one airport you would recommend?
You will have to change trains arriving to Zermatt, both from Zurich Airport and from Geneva Airport there are NO direct trains. To check details please use the timetable link provided above.
Thank you again Steph, I had realised after I posted the last question that I wouldn’t be able to get a direct train from either airport.
I guess what I meant to ask is, would you recommend a train journey from Geneva or Zurich? Is one nicer than the other (train facilities and of course the scenic route).
I really appreciate your advice. This forum is so helpful.
If you travel from Zurich Airport you have the option of getting off at Bern, the capital, for some time and including this to your trip: – http://www.myswissalps.com/be rn

It really depends on what you want to do when you get there.
The day saver pass will not cover any mountain trains or cable cars. If you want to just walk around the town you will not need anything else. If you want to go up the little matterhorn or the gornergrat you would have to pay full price.
So for the saturday of your arrival the day saver pass will get you to Zermatt but you would have to pay for all the cablecars and trains once up in Zermatt.
A Swiss travel pass will give you free travel to and from Zermatt but will also give you 50% reduction on the price of the cablecars in Zermatt. You will have to work out which cable cars and trains you want to take once you are in Zermatt to see if it is worthwhile buying a Swiss Travel Pass. A three day swiss travel pass is 230 CHF – 76 CHF/day.
