Jungfrau region trips with Berner Oberland Pass

Short summary – read this first

Kenni Brooks is planning a trip to Interlaken from April 25 to April 28, 2024, using the Berner Oberland Pass as their main transport option. They want to know about activities available during their stay, specifically if the pass covers certain excursions and the costs associated with them. They're looking for tips on navigating their itinerary and recommendations for accommodations.

Key takeaways:
  • The Berner Oberland Pass covers many excursions, making it a cost-effective choice for exploring the area.
  • Harder Kulm funicular station is a short walk from Interlaken Ost train station.
  • For the Jungfraujoch trip, you'll need to buy a separate ticket costing CHF 99.
  • The funicular to Harder Kulm and cable cars to Schilthorn are operational in late April, but check for any seasonal closures.
  • Consider combining Lauterbrunnen, Harder Kulm, and a boat trip on Lake Brienz for a fulfilling day.

Based on the activities we’re interested in, we’re planning to purchase the Berner Oberland Pass. I’ve seen this pass called the Berner Oberland Pass and the Bernese Oberland Pass on different websites. That’s the same pass, correct?

We’ll be traveling from Lucerne to Interlaken arriving Interlaken around 11 am on Thursday April 25, 2024. We have thought of some activities that we’d like to do while using Interlaken as a base Thursday April 25, 2024 through Saturday night April 27, 2024, see below. We decided the Berner Oberland Rail Pass is the best option. Let me know if you disagree.

After our time in the region, we’ll depart Interlaken early Sunday morning April 28, 2024, traveling to the Zurich airport by train, we’ll purchase a point-to-point ticket for that train trip since it’s not covered by the Berner Oberland Pass.

The list below are activities we are interested in while using Interlaken as a base. I understand we won’t be able to do all of these due to limited time, but we’ll do what we can based on weather each day and taking advantage of free/reduced cost using the Berner Oberland Rail Pass.

    – Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald First: train and funicular free

    – On way up to Jungfraujoch: Interlaken to Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg – change to the Jungfraubahn to the top.On way down, train via Wengen, then gondola ride Wengen to Mannlichen and Mannlichen to Grindelwald.QUESTION: is this possible?Does the Berner Oberland Rail Pass cover the gondola Wengen – Mannlichen – Grindelwald? If we have the Berner Oberland Pass, is the cost to Jungfraujoch CHF 99? Any additional costs other than Activities at the top?

Harder Kulm: Funicular from Interlaken to Harder Kulm is free with Berner Oberland Pass. QUESTION: Where is the Funicular to Harder Kulm located in Interlaken? Easy to walk to?

Schilthorn:Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen, switch to cable car in Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp, once in Grutschalp take the narrow-gauge train to Murren, once in Murren board the cable car and switch to another one in Birg, next is the summit of Schilthorn. The cost of the cable car from Murren to Schilthorn is CHF 42.80 which is 50% off with the Berner Oberland Pass. QUESTION: Are all of the other cable cars (Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp and Murren to Birg to Schilthorn summit) and the narrow-gauge train (Grutschalp to Murren) free with the Berner Oberland Pass? So, the total cost with the Berner Oberland Pass to get from Interlaken to Schilthorn is CHF 42.80?

Lake Brienz and/or Lake Thun, free with Berner Oberland Pass

Lauterbrunnen Falls, spend a little time in Lauterbrunnen, train from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen is free with the Berner Oberland Pass.

Mount Titlis: I see that the Cable car from Engelberg to Mount Titlis is 50% off with the Berner Oberland Pass, and the train from Hergiswil to Engelberg is 50% off with the Berner Oberland Pass. QUESTION: The cost of the Cable car Engelberg to Titlis is CHF 105, or CHF 52.50 for us (50% off with Berner Oberland Pass), does that price include the round-trip train from Hergiswil to Engelberg? Are there any other costs to get back to Interlaken by train?

QUESTION: Any advice on which of the above are all day outings and which can be combined?

QUESTION: April is considered the ‘in between’ time when things quiet down before the busy summer season. Is there anything I’ve listed that’s closed, such as Cable cars, gondolas, train routes, etc. during the days we’ll be there, Thursday April 25, 2024 to Saturday April 27, 2024?

I see that the Berner Oberland Pass is available for travel between April 1 and October 31. We need to use it to travel from Lucerne to Interlaken on Thursday April 25, 2024, when will it be available for purchase?

I read on your Forum that Berner Oberland Pass promotions are not common, but should there be a promotional discount, you will post to the Forum, correct?

Is the Interlaken/Jungfrau area crowded at the end of April? We’re coming from a river cruise that ends in Lucerne on the morning of April 25, that’s why our dates are at the end of April instead of the summer months, but we’re looking forward to cool/cold weather, less crowds, and hoping for clear days at the tops of summit(s) while we’re there. We also plan to go paragliding in Interlaken.

Sorry this is so lengthy and thank you in advance for your insight. We haven’t booked accommodations for Interlaken yet, we’ll do that within the next month or so. If you know of any accommodation that you prefer in Interlaken, please let me know. Or if you think we should use a place other than Interlaken as a base, please let me know. We’ll each be handling a very large/heavy piece of luggage, so we want to be within walking distance of a train station, but we’re flexible about where to base, so if Grindelwald or another location makes more sense, please let me know your thoughts on that.

    Thanks,

    Kenni Brooks

    Hi Kenni Brooks,

Yes, the Berner Oberland Pass is also known as the Bernese Oberland Pass. Based on your itinerary, I agree purchasing this pass seems the best option.

    To answer your questions:

    • Combined trip to Jungfraujoch and Männlichen – yes, this is doable. The Berner Oberland Pass fully covers your trip up to Eigergletscher. You will need to purchase a connecting ticket to Jungfraujoch (CHF99). The ticket price includes admission and return trip. You can find information about activities on Jungfraujoch here: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch
    • The Harder Kulm funicular station is located just a few minutes walk from the Interlaken Ost train station. The path is well marked. You can find further details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/harderkulm/gettingthere
    • Schilthorn – The Berner Oberland Pass provides free travel on the cable car from Stechelberg up to Mürren, and free travel on the cablecar and train via Gritschalp from Lauterbrunnen to Mürren. You need a ticket to ride the cable car from Mürren to Schilthorn. You can find information about tickets to Schilthorn here: http://www.myswissalps.com/schilthorn/tickets
    • Titlis – The Berner Oberland provides free travel up Lucerne train station and discounted travel from Lucerne to Engelberg. The cable car ride to Titlis is also discounted. You will need to purchase the train tickets and cable car tickets separately. You can find information about tickets to Titlis here: http://www.myswissalps.com/titlis/tickets
    • If you prefer to combine a few excursions in one day, my pick would be Lauterbrunnen + Harder Kulm + boat trip on Lake Brienz. You can find tips on how plan boat trips on Lake Brienz here: http://www.myswissalps.com/boatlakebrienz
    • April is considered off season but the funicular to Harder Kulm should be operational again by late April. Schilthorn and Titlis are accessible almost all year round. Please check the official website for the latest information.
    • Purchase options for the Berner Oberland Pass are available here: http://www.myswissalps.com/regionalpassberneseoberland/price

Do reach out if you need further information.

    Regards,

    Anna
