We will be in switzerland in September. I’m trying to figure out how to go from Lucerne to Lauterbrunnen and still get to ride on the Brienz Rothorn Mountain stream train. Is that possible for a day trip? I know you can take the train from lucerne to interlaken to get to Lauterbrunnen but is it possible to do the Brienz train the same day. Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

    Hi Njk50,

It is possible to combine Lauterbrunnen + Brienzer Rothorn in one day. Previously, you wanted to combine this with Mürren as well – that would be too ambitious in my opinion.

I suggest starting the day early and get to Brienz as early as possible. The Brienzer Rothorn is a popular local attraction so the queue to get on the steam train could get really long. It takes about 1 hour to get to the top and 1 hour to get down. So you could easily be spending half a day here. There are a couple of restaurants at the top so you might want to have lunch here. After lunch, you can continue your journey to Lauterbrunnen and have the rest of the day to explore the beautiful valley before heading back to Lucerne.

I hope this gives you some ideas how to plan your day trip.

    Regards,

    Anna

thanks for the quick reply. I’m still a little confused about what train tickets we need to buy from Lucerne. Would it be Lucerne to Brienz to Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen and back to Lucerne? Sorry for all the questions. Just not sure how or where to buy the tickets. thank you so much for the help

Ok. I think I have that wrong. Would it be Lucerne to Brienz. Brienz to Lauterbrunnen. Lauterbrunnen to Interlaken and then back to Lucerne?

    Hi Njk50,

If you are buying point-to-point tickets, you can purchase a return ticket from Lucerne to Lauterbrunnen via Interlaken Ost. This ticket will be valid for 1 day and includes stops in Brienz and Interlaken Ost.

You can use the SBB timetable to plan your journey.

    Regards,

    Anna

thank you. so you can get off in Brienz first, take the mountain steam train from there round trip then back to interlaken and then to Lauterbrunnen and then to Lucerne. Sounds easy enough. When you purchase the ticket can you travel on any train out of Lucerne? thank you so much for your help

It is also possible to do a round trip on the Brienzer Rothorn:

    Brienz – Rothorn (train)

    Rothorn – Sorenberg (cableway)

    Sorenberg – Schupfheim (bus)

    Schupfheim – Luzern (train)

Rothorn – luzern by this route is about 1 hour and 15 min faster

    Hi Njk50!

Just a small reminder that you may not need regular train tickets for Lucerne-Lauterbrunnen in case you have a valid rail pass. I noticed you’re considering using a rail pass in your other thread: http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/zurich-lucerne-basel-in-late-sept.

If you’d have a valid Saver Day Pass, you’d only need a ticket for Brienzer Rothorn and nothing else.

With a Swiss Half Fare Card you’d need 50% discounted tickets.

Hi Anna. So I need to buy the saver day pass a head of time online. then do I need to get tickets or do you just use the pass as your ticket? Also do you have any idea what the brienz mt train cost round trip. I’ve looked but can’t seem to find a fare. We can leave Lucerne, get off at Brienz, take the steam train round trip, get back on the train, change in interlaken and go onto Lauterbrunnen and then reverse back to Lucerne. I hope I have it this time. thanks for all your help

The Saver Day Pass is a ‘ride at will’ aka ‘rover’ ticket. Once you have a valid one you can travel on all the main ‘day to day’ routes of the Swiss network including buses, trains, lake boats etc

    Hi Njk50,

if you have a valid Saver Day Pass, you can travel for free on trains, busses, boats and also city transport. But transport into the mountains are not free nor discounted (except in a few cases). this is why you still have to buy a ticket for Brienzer Rothorn. You find a list and a downloadable map about the validity of the Saver Day Pass here: http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass/validity.

And yes, make sure to buy it well in advance, as they can run out, and also the price may vary. You can buy it here: http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass/price.

The normal price of a retour ticket for the Brienzer Rothorn (from Brienz to Rothorn) costs around 94 CHF per person. You can find the timetable and the prices here: http://www.myswissalps.com/brienzerrothorn/tickets.

Thank you for the information. So at the train station in Lucerne do we need to show anyone the super saver pass or can we use it to just board the train. Also in Brienz is the stream train close to where we get off the train from Lucerne? thanks

    Hi Njk50,

If you have a Saver Day Pass, you can simply board the train, find your seats and enjoy your trip. Ticket inspections are done randomly on board, in which case you are obliged to show your tickets or valid railpass when requested.

The Brienzer Rothorn cog train station is located across the street from the Brienz main railway station. Keep a lookout for the signposted directions.
