Lauterbrunnen or Wengen as base ?

Short summary – read this first

Vandana is traveling from Berlin to Interlaken on June 18 and wants to visit Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn in two days. She's considering Lauterbrunnen or Wengen as her base for accommodations but is having trouble finding a place in Lauterbrunnen. She also wants advice on travel passes for her trip.

Key takeaways:
  • Choose Wengen for beautiful views and more accommodation options.
  • Consider getting the 3-day Swiss Travel Pass for convenience, especially for trips to Jungfraujoch, Schilthorn, and beyond.
  • If you don’t find a hotel in Lauterbrunnen, Wengen is a good alternative.
  • For your transfer in Tirano, consider allowing extra time for your next train if you're unsure about the 8-minute buffer.

    Hi all,

I am travelling on 18th June from Berlin to Interlaken via Bern. I would like to visit Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn within 2 days. I had lauterbrunnen in mind as base but I am having trouble finding accomodation for my dates. There seem to be more hotel options in Wengen.

Also, on the way back, I would like to travel from Interlaken to St Moritz for one day before catching the Bernina express to Tirano.

What would be a better base for my itinerary?

Which travel pass would better suit my trip?

Thanks for your inputs and advice,

    Cheers,

    Vandana

I would definitely choose Wengen over Lauterbrunnen. The village is lovely with beautiful views in all directions.

Hi Melpomenne and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Wengen is a favourite on MySwissAlps but Lauterbrunnen may be slightly better for catching trains around the area (not significantly…).

    Try the hotels suggested here:

As for the best rail pass – that will depend on your exact travel each day. Have a read here for help once you’ve planned each day’s trips: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass

I’d have a hard look at the 3 days Swiss Travel Pass for simplicity: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass

Lauterbrunnen hands down and I have stayed at both more than once. That said. both are excellent.

    Hi Vandana,

An “outside the square” suggestion. Skip the Jungfrau and go direct to Zermatt. Then take Glacier Express to St Moritz and Bernina Express to Tirano. You’re welcome. 😎

Good day peeps.. on top of Vandana’s question, I have a question about Wengen too.

When I tried to search for trainride to Wengen, the choices are lauterbrunnen EY and Lauterbrunnen bahnoff but no Wengen.

Same goes with when i search from geneva to Lauterbrunnen, so many lauterbrunnens came out. Usually which one do you choose?

Hello Shelly and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) or the highly-recommended SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) to plan your travel and buy tickets if required. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on this page – http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable.

Just look for Lauterbrunnen or Wengen without any additional text.

Please, please, read the instructions page that Rockoyster linked you to. And, follow his advice about station names.

If you want to know what all the stations with extra names are, you can find out from this map:

    map.search.ch/?pos=637456,161846&z=12 8&poi=bergbahn,haltest elle,zug

Mouse over the icons to get official names.

    Hi all,

Thank you for all your responses.

So far, I’m still trying to find a hotel in lauterbrunnen, but if I don’t I’ll stick to Wengen. Also, is there any night life in Wengen? Can i grab a bite somewhere late night?

I have also taken the Bernina Express ticket and getting off at Tirano and there is only 8 mins buffer/transit time for the next train to Milan. Will that be adequate or I better wait another hour or two for the next train, in order to be on the safe side?

    Cheers,

    Vandana

    Hello Melpomenne,

You couldn’t find a nice Hotel in Lauterbrunnen in the recommendations in Luke’s link? Alternatively you can also look into rentals:
    http://www.myswissalps.com/la uterbrunnen/rentals

Regarding the connection in Tirano, this thread and Google maps should answer your question:
    http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/bernina-express-tirano-train-station-and-bus

If you feel uncomfortable then it might be a nice idea to take the next train and enjoy Tirano a little, maybe have a meal?!
