A traveler named M is planning a visit to Switzerland at the end of September and wants to confirm if their ambitious itinerary of visiting Lucerne, Interlaken, Schilthorn, Gstaad, and Bern in one day is doable by train. They seek advice on the feasibility of this plan and the use of the Swiss Travel Pass for their trip.
Key takeaways:
Check the SBB website or app for train schedules and tips for using the timetable.
Not sure someone already asked this before but sorry if this is a repetition. I will be visiting Switzerland in End of September and will be getting the Swiss travel pass. Will be staying in Lucerne. Just want to confirm if the Following Itinerary on a Monday is possible in one day.
Lucerne – Interlaken – Schilthorn – GSTAAD – Bern Old city – Lucerne.
Not sure this is possible on train or not in one day.
You could probably do it but it would be at a bit of a gallop.
Use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) or the highly-recommended SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) to plan your travel and buy tickets if required. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on this page – http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable.

What is do-able and bare-able on one day is very individual, so please use Rockoysters links to find out how you feel with that day you plan. It is quite long, I agree on that. Could you spread it out on to more days?!
Btw, find information on all the destinations you mention within this trip by typing them into the search bar of this page.
It’s a very bad idea to try and do all those three things in one day – you would have to depart each place almost as soon as you arrive.
Luzern – Interlaken – Schilthorn is OK as one day trip
Luzern – Bern is a good day trip, or possible a 3/4 day trip (you need time to walk around Bern and visit the sights) – should include the Bear park other places
I wouldn’t bother with Gstaad – there isn’t really much there in my opinion
Thanks for all your replies. Really helpful. I only wanted to visit the GSTADD -Sannen Bridge on the way back from Bern but I guess it will too much. I will now only focus on Interlaken – Schilthorn – Bern and back to Lucerne.
Can anyone please also suggest: :
1. I have attached a picture post in Lauterbrunnen .How do you reach this spot in Lauterbrunnen if we going on train.
2. It will end of Sept and If we have a Swiss pass is Schilthorn the only free mountain peak I can visit for free or is there any other suggestion to visit in Interlaken rather than going all the way to Schilthorn.
2. Go to Schilthorn. It’s a good use of you STP. From Lauterbrunnen a very nice circuit to do is to Grütschalp (cable car), Mürren (train), Gimmelwald (cable car), Stechelberg (cable car), Lauterbrunnen (bus). From Mürren you can easily visit Schiltorn and Birg (don’t miss the Thrill Walk). In between Stechelberg and Lauterbrunnen the bus stops at the Trummelbach Falls.
Not really. It’s not exactly direct. You have to change at Interlaken OST and possibly Spiez depending on the connection you choose. The train line alongside Lake Thun, on which you will Travel is a lovely scenic trip.l
kindly know that if you completely want to enjoy this itinerary.. this is a half day trip.
if you wanted to visit the sannen and gstaad bridge for DDLJ. It’s not worth it. A very small bridge/ a common one as well. You will find many like that in Switzerland. I visited there cause I was staying there and it was close to where I was staying.
Not worth it to take a two hour train ride to be there.
Best Regards

I didn’t know what was meant by the “Gstadd Sannen bridge”. (Please take care to use correct spellings so that we can offer the best advice.)
Now I see the significance, if as Rkghauri suggests this is in connection with ‘DDLJ’ (which I had never heard of either) I can tell you that if you look out on the right hand side of the train between Luzern and Interlaken you will see one of the locations – on DDLJ it is wrongly spelled at ‘Lake Lungerer Lee’. It should say Lungernsee – ie Lake Lungern, which is by the town of Lungern. The Luzern – Interlaken train passes through Lungern and you could stop for an hour and carry on on the next train. The lakeshore is about 15 minutes walk (beware the return walk would be uphill) from the station
This would be FAR FAR better than visiting the Saanen bridge which is a very basic, small, plain concrete road bridge of which there must be billions across the world.
Thank you so much for your great response on the GSTADD. I will skip GSTADD now and Lake Lungern seems to be a very good option. As it will be day light savings even I reach Bern late around 3:30 p.m. (depending upon how tired we are and weather ) I will have time till 7:00 p.m. to see the old city.
🙂 DDLJ is refeared to a 90’s movie very famous in INDO/PAK subcontinent. Many locations were filmed in GSTADD. People specially visit some of those locations. Even I am not sure if Ahmad83 was referring to the same. I just guessed. Sorry for any confusion.

Hi Rkghauri,
yes I was referring to DDLj. But the issue is I don’t have much time to do in 1 day. I am already visiting Mr. Titlis and Rigi one day earlier so will be too much. But thanks for the suggestions.
