Short summary – read this first

A traveler recently shared their satisfying trip to Switzerland, starting in Zurich and exploring Lucerne, Interlaken, and Mt. Titlis over four days. They needed tips for planning their itinerary and managing unexpected changes, like cable car closures due to high winds.

Key takeaways:
  • Use the Swiss Travel Pass for easier travel across the trains and attractions.
  • Always check the local weather and operational status before heading to popular attractions like Mt. Pilatus.
  • Have a backup activity planned, such as a lake cruise, in case of closures or bad weather.

Many thanks to the forum members for their suggestions our trip came to an end with satisfaction but the desire to explore more on our next trip. Here is how our trip went.

    1. Arrived at Zurich at 6:30 AM on Dec 26. Got to the train station at 8:30 AM. Bought the train tickets to Zug (as I had the tell pass) not realizing that Zug even though on the Lucerne train line could be a last stop for the train. So had to change the train at Lucerne. Reached Lucerne at 9:50 AM. Got to the hotel at 10:30 AM. Checked in, took bath, rested the infant with us and got out of the hotel at 1:00 PM to go to Mt. Pilatus. Even though we checked the Pilatus website for the opening, by the time we reached there they had shut down the cable cars due to high winds. So, came up with the alternate plan to do the Lake Lucerne Cruise. Did the cruise which was quite amazing. Came back from the cruise, had dinner and ended the day.

    2. Planned to go to Interlaken. Took the 10 AM train, reached Interlaken at noon. It was awesome views all the way even with the cloudy/rainy weather. Walked around Interlaken as Harder Kulm funicular was closed. Ate lunch, came back to Lucerne at 6 PM. Walked around the Lucerrne streets as they were beautifully decorated.

    3. Day 3 decided to go to Mt. Titlis. Started at 9 AM to go to Engleberg. Took the shuttle to the Titlis base station. Queues were superlong but the gentlemen there helped us to get into the line that saved atleast 1 hour. It was too crowded. Went up and stayed there for 3 hours. Spent time in the panoramic lounge, glacier cave, got out but it was too windy and cold for our 16 month old so stayed mostly indoors. Headed back to Lucerne at 5 PM.

    4. Day 4, return to airport and fly home.

Thanks again to all for their constructive suggestions and help with the trip planning.
