Lucerne or Bernese Oberland for 3 nights

Short summary – read this first

A traveler has planned a 15-night trip to Switzerland along with their son and daughter-in-law, who will be arriving in Zurich three days early. They are looking for advice on whether their son and daughter-in-law should explore Lucerne or the Bernese Oberland during that time before they all meet in Lausanne.

Key takeaways:
  • Suggest that the son and daughter-in-law stay in Bern for easy access to both Lucerne and the Bernese Oberland.
  • The train from Bern to Lucerne takes about 1.5 hours, making it a convenient option.
  • Exploring Wengen is an excellent choice since they are already heading there with the family later.

I have planned a 15 night trip to Switzerland. My son and his wife will be arriving to Zurich 3 nights before us from the United States around noon. We will all meet in Lausanne for 3 nights and then go to Zermatt for 3 nights. My son and his wife need to leave after that but my husband, daughter and I will continue on to Wengen and then Lucern. Would you suggest my son and his wife explore Lucern or Bernese Oberland before we get there?

    Hi Bless10s,

I recommend choosing a base from which they can easily plan day trips to Lucerne and the Bernese Oberland. Staying in Bern might be ideal. It’s a transport hub and has direct train services to Lucerne and Interlaken, and even to Lausanne. For more information about Bern: http://www.myswissalps.com/bern. You can find hotel options here: http://www.myswissalps.com/bern/hotels

    • Bern to Lucerne is 1.5 hr by train
    • Bern to Interlaken is about 1 hr by train
    • Bern to Lausanne is roughly 1 hr by train

You can use the SBB timetable to check train schedules and plan your trips: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

    Kind regards,

    Anna

“Would you suggest my son and his wife explore Lucern or Bernese Oberland before we get there?” – Yes. Since they’re arriving 3 nights before you, they’ll have to do something until you arrive. Bernase Oberland or Luzern, or both, would be an excellent choice. Each different but both wonderful in my opinion. It all depends on their interests. I like Anna’s suggestion for them to stay in Bern since it is easy to get to both BO and Luzern, and eventually Lausanne, from there.

Thank you both for the responses. I think they are leaning toward Wengen but I really like the ideas of Bern.

    Hi again,

Wengen is great for exploring the Jungfrau region. Not a bad idea since you’re headed there too.

You can find hotel options in Wengen here: http://www.myswissalps.com/wengen/hotels

    Regards,

    Anna
