Männlichen-Kleine Scheidegg hike open mid-June?

Short summary – read this first

Kezzie is planning a trip to Lauterbrunnen with her 3.5-year-old in mid-June and wants to know if the panorama trail will be open or snow-covered. She has experience in the Alps but is concerned about the conditions for her toddler. The group offers helpful insights on hiking options suitable for families.

Key takeaways:
  • The Männlichen-Kleine Scheidegg trail usually opens in mid-June, but check local conditions closer to your arrival.
  • For family-friendly hikes, consider shorter trails around 3-4 miles, and look for lower-altitude options.
  • Verify the status of swimming pools in Lauterbrunnen or Wengen as they may depend on weather conditions, but hotels often have indoor pools available.

Hello all; we will be in Switzerland in June 2022; arriving in Lauterbrunnen around the 14th if plans work in our favour.

We would really like to take our 3 1/2 year old on the panorama trail, how likely is it to be open or snow covered? I am experienced in the alps and unconcerned in most conditions but my toddler is not!

    Many thanks!

    Hello Kezzie, welcome to MySwissAlps!

Mid-June is the period during which the Männlichen-Kleine Scheidegg trail (https://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/maennlichen-kleinescheidegg) usually becomes accessible. So if things work in your favor, you can enjoy this hike. In case it’s colder or more snowy than usual, you may have bad luck. How long will you be staying in Lauterbrunnen? Weather circumstances can change quickly (http://www.myswissalps.com/weather), so if you’re not dependent on just one or a few days, the trail may open during your stay.

The local tourism agency will be able to tell you which trails are and are not open once you’re there. You can also keep an eye on http://www.maennlichen.ch/en/summer/experiences/panorama-trail.html.

There are beautiful routes at lower altitude too. You can find examples at https://www.myswissalps.com/berneseoberland/activities (scroll down to the hiking section).

Enjoy your planning and reach out to us if you have more questions!

That is a fabulous answer thank you! I am now looking to stay in Wengen, I have stayed in Kandersteg and lauterbrunnen previously – pre children – and visited Wengen, I like the idea of traffic free/limited vehicles when I have a small child with me.

I will be looking for shorter hikes, 3-4 miles which is my child’s usual mileage – we hike lots – and had been recommended the panoramic route by a number of people.

I am hoping the swimming pools in either lauterbrunnen or Wengen or will have opened by then also.

    Hi Kezzie,

Wengen is located beautifully indeed. Please find information and accommodation options at https://www.myswissalps.com/wengen.

When looking for hikes, you can use the filter options at the right to narrow down your search. A few examples of fairly easy trails (some of which are at higher altitude too, so you’ll have to check if they’re open once you’re there):

I’m not sure about the opening dates of the open-air swimming pools. These too are probably weather dependent. Note that some hotels have indoor pools, which are always accessible. An example in Wengen is the Sunstar Alpine Hotel.

Thank you so much for your comprehensive reply!

I am sure that even if the trails and swimming pools are not fully open we will find sufficient to occupy ourselves! Ballenberg and Blausee are on our list as possible visits.

I think I have found an apartment to rent this afternoon, so hopefully everything will now fall into place.

I am very much looking forward to returning to the area.

Absolutely, there’s more than enough to keep you busy for weeks (if not months) in Wengen / the Bernese Oberland! I can imagine you’re looking forward to your stay.

The Blausee was one of my favorite spots when I was a child. The surrounding forest just felt magical. I hope your 3-year old will have a similar experience :-).
