Matterhorn by hiking

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Zermatt and wants advice on hiking routes to see the Matterhorn. They are considering two itineraries starting from Tasch and looking for accessible hikes that offer great views without being too long, ideally not exceeding 4 hours.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider hiking from Riffelalp to Sunnegga for fantastic views of the Matterhorn without the high costs of other routes.
  • If you're looking for easier hikes, visiting the lakes near Blauherd is a great option, especially for picturesque reflections.
  • The Gornergrat offers stunning views but can be pricey, so weigh your options based on budget and time.
  • Make sure to book your return ticket for the Sunnegga well in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles.

We have a car, and can drive to Tasch.
From there the train to Zermatt is around 15 CHF return(max).
We were thinking of riding train to zermatt, and then hiking to some point where we can see matterhorn or glaciers.
    Can you suggest a hike.
Alternatively, if there is some other place to view matterhorn from apart from zermatt, up close and personal, that will also be good.
Gorgernat is good, but expensive, so zermatt hike would be a good idea.

Hi tsk1979! There are several viewing points in and around Zermatt, offering a great view of the Matterhorn. The Gornergrat is one of them and yes, it’s expensive, but the train ride is spectacular and so is the panoramic view at the top. Cheaper options are viewing point Sunnegga or railway station Riffelalp (about halfway up to the Gornergrat). Hiking from Rotenboden to Riffelalp or from Riffelalp to Sunnegga may just be what you’re looking for. Have fun!

Yes, Riffealp is great, just opposite of the Matterhorn. There is an easy, but rather steep hike from Zermatt:

    Thanks for your replies.
We have planned 2 itenaries, and will be doing one of the following
    1. Easier itenary
    -Park at Tasch
    -Train to Zermatt
    -Return ticket for Sunegga
-Hike to 2-3 lakes (near Blauherd also) from sunnegga and try to capture reflection
-Take cable car back to Zermatt from sunnegga
    – Walk back to Tasch along railway line

    2. Tougher
    – One way ticket to sunegga after reaching zermatt by train
-Hike through the lake trails to blauherd, and then walk all the way back to Tasch

Second itenary looks promising, but we do not want to hike more than 3-4 hours (11-12kms?)

Train to Rotenboden etc., is very expensive, so choosing sunegga platform+hiking
