Milan, Interlaken, Glacier + Bernina Express route

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning their first trip to Switzerland this March with their mum and sister, starting from Milan. They want advice on a 6+-night itinerary focusing on scenic mountainous views, while keeping in mind their mum's limited mobility. They're looking at a route that includes Interlaken, Zermatt, and scenic train rides like the Glacier and Bernina Express.

Key takeaways:
  • Adjust your route to start from Milan to Tirano via Bernina Express, then Chur to Zermatt via Glacier Express for a feasible 6-day trip.
  • Stopping at Andermatt is a good idea to enjoy scenic views like Oberalp Pass while traveling to Interlaken and Zermatt.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass is the best option for travel primarily within Switzerland, though it has limited validity for borders.
  • Check provided links for route maps to better understand train coverage and passes.

    Hi guys

It will be my first visit to Switzerland this March and my starting point will be from Milan. My mum and sis are travelling with me and my mum is not very fit to walk long distances.

I’m wondering if this route is feasible for 6+- nights?

Milan – ( Interlaken, Lauterbrunen, Grindelwald ) – Zermat – Glacier express route but on local trains – Chur – Bernina express route but on local trains – Tirano

Is that a good plan in terms of feasibility, fatigue and cost? Am open to suggestions on how many nights should i stay at each location.

My main preference would be more on the scenic mountainous view and also to bring mum to see some and touch some snow.

    Thanks.

    Hi lcsiew,

    Welcome to MyswissAlps.

Interlaken does not really provide a good access to either the Glacier Express and Bernina Express. I would adjust your itinerary as follows:

Milan – Tirano to Chur via Bernina Express – Chur to Zermatt via Glacier Express – Zermatt to Interlaken.

This is achievable in 6 days. You can find further details about route planning here:

    Hope this gets you started.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Thanks Anna for your advise.

What if i stop at Andermatt and go to Interlaken from here via Luzern? Then from Interlaken to Zermatt and lastly from Zermatt back to Milan.

Will i miss anything between Andermatt and Visp, and will this be a better routing option?

    Thanks.

Yes, stopping at Andermatt is OK, as you will see most of the best bits of the St Moritz – Brig route, especially the Oberalp Pass and the spectacular descent to Andermatt.

Your proposed route now is good. I can recommended local trains as there are some great scenic places to stop off on both the Bernina Railway Tirano – St Moritz, the Albula Railway St Moritz – Chur and the RhB / MGB railway Chur – Disentis – Oberalp Pass – Andermatt.

Then you can go Andermatt – Goeschenen via the famous SchoellenenBahn, then to Luzern via the Wassen spirals.

Luzern – Interlaken – Zermatt – Milano is also very logical.

    thanks for the great advise

one more question, if i have a swiss pass or day saver pass, is that valid for the routes that cross countries?

    example,

    Tirano (italy) <-> Morteratsch

    Milan (Italy) <-> Interlaken

Tirano RhB is situated just inside Italy but is a Swiss owned station so the Saver Day pass is valid on all trains from this station.

Milano is well within Italy and is not served by internal Swiss trains so Swiss tickets are not valid south of Domodossola

    Hi Icsiew!

In addition to 1960man’s answer: the Saver Day Pass and Swiss Travel Pass are valid within Switzerland only, with a few exceptions in bordering countries. You can download the validity maps of both rail passes here:

If you’re not sure yet which pass best matches your plans, this page can be of help: https://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass. But looking at your current plans, a 6-day Swiss Travel Pass seems to be an obvious option: https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass.

    thanks all for the advise

took me awhile to understand the railmap due to its large size and frequent zooming in / out

    🙂

I get that lscsiew, especially if you’re not familiar with the topography of a country. Good you’re starting to understand the maps now. You’ll also find lists of the main covered routes/activities further down on the validity pages. Maybe those work better for you.
