Pilatus and Stanserhorn from Lucerne in 1 day?

Short summary – read this first

Jmumark83 is planning a trip to Pilatus and Stanserhorn from Lucerne and wants to know if they can do both in one day. They have three full days in Lucerne and plan to spend time hiking at Stoos Ridge and visiting Lauterbrunnen as well.

Key takeaways:
  • You can visit Pilatus and Stanserhorn in one day; just ensure you check the weather beforehand for clear views.
  • Use the SBB timetable to efficiently plan your journeys, as train and bus connections are frequent.
  • An early start from Lucerne is recommended for both Pilatus and Lauterbrunnen visits, as travel could take over two hours.
  • Consider a boat trip on Lake Lucerne after Pilatus for a more relaxed experience if time permits.

First, thank you for creating this page. It has provided some much already. My question is can I do Pilatus and Stansehorn in same day? I was thinking an early bus from Lucerne to kriens, cable car to Pilatus, cogwheel down train to Stans train back to Aplnaschtad and ferry back to Lucerne? I have 3 full days in Lucerne and want to reserve 1 day for Stoos ridge hike and 1 for Lauterbrunnen. Thoughts?

    Hello there Jmumark83,

Thank you – glad to hear you are finding our website useful/

Yes, a visit to Pilatus and Stanserhorn in the one day is doable. Just double check the weather forecast the day before – it would be a shame to head up to both and not be able to enjoy the views. That’s good you are intending on an early start 🙂

Do use the SBB timetable to plan your journeys. https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

Here’s our handy link to Lauterbrunnen, an early start would be good too, as the journey is over 2 hours from Lucerne.

Likewise with your visit to Stoos, it’s just under 2 hours to reach from Lucerne.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

I’’m curious about your 1 day trip to Lauterbrunnen. If all you want to do is tour the village, that can be done in half an hour. On the other hand if you want to branch out to nearby locations around Lauterbrunnen, then it may be a packed trip, depending on what your want to see.

You can do Pilatus & Stans in one day. Bus/gondola to the top at Pilatus takes just over one hour, spend some time there, catch the cogwheel down to Alpnachstad (35 minutes). You could then catch a train to Stans via a change in Hergiswil (20 minutes), and the funicular/gondola to the top (30 minutes). Once back down to Stans, you can catch a train to Luzern (15-20 minutes).

Check the SBB schedule for train times. Trains along those routes are fairly frequent.

Planned on visiting murren and trummelbach falls as well as Lauterbrunnen. Is that too far to travel for that? Would we be better visiting Weggis and or Vitznau?

    Hi Jmumark83,

A day trip to Lauterbrunnen and Mürren from Lucerne is definitely possible. You can take the scenic Lucerne-Interlaken Express to Interlaken Ost, then take a connecting train to Lauterbrunnen. Use the SBB timetable to check train schedules.

    regards,

    Anna

    Hi Jmumark83,

Pilatus and Stanserhorn on the same day is certainly possible but also a little tight in terms of time from my point of view. An alternative after the visit to Pilatus would be a leisurely boat trip on Lake Lucerne back to Lucerne and a visit to the Gletschergarten there, if that were possible. In Lauterbrunnen I would definitely visit the Trümmelbach Falls and Mürren.

    Have a great trip!

    Martin
