Planning a trip to Lauterbrunnen area on April 14th 2024

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named StevefromHou is planning a 2-night stay in the Jungfrau region with friends who are new to Switzerland. They want to experience the area, but the cable cars to First are out of service. StevefromHou is considering taking the gondola from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp, a train to Murren, and then visiting Schilthorn for stunning views.

Key takeaways:
  • Check the weather before visiting Schilthorn for the best views.
  • Consider getting a Swiss Travel Pass for convenient access to mountain transportation in the Jungfrau region.
  • Walking from Grutschalp to Murren offers a beautiful view and takes about 90 minutes.
  • Hiking along the valley floor from Stechelberg to Lauterbrunnen, especially past Trümmelbach Falls, is a lovely 2-3 hour hike.

    Hello MySwissAlps,

I am bringing a couple friends with me and will only be in the area for 2 nights on our way to Montreux and then on to Barcelona so they can catch a cruise.

They have never been to Switzerland and wanted a taste, I figured this was a good place to spend 2 nights.

I was wanting to go up to First (I have never been) but I understand the cable cars will be out of service while I am there.

I thought about Top of Europe but I have been a couple times and figured they could do that when they come back on their own.

What I am now thinking, is taking the gondola from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp and then train to Murren, cable car up to Brig and Schilthorn.

Coming down to Brig and Murren then Gimmelwald to Stechelberg and bus back to Lauterbrunnen.

    What are your thoughts?

    Any other ideas?

    Thank you

    Hi StevefromHou,

You have researched well.  Yes, it will give your friends  a good introduction to the Jungfrau region. Just check the weather is fine for a visit to Schilthorn (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/schilthorn/)  Likewise if the weather is fine, you’ll also witness some amazing views of the area, from Mürren  (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/murren/)

A visit to Grindelwald-First is doable.  Scroll to “Operation dates, schedules and timetable” for more details, in the below link:

Given you will be using the mountain transportation in the Jungfrau region but it may make sense for them to invest in a rail pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/tickets/)?

For other activities in the region, you can research here:  https://www.myswissalps.com/region/jungfrau-region/

Perhaps they maybe interested in some lower altitude hikes or a visit to Trümmelbach Falls, near Lauterbrunnen (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/lauterbrunnen/)?

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

P.S.  You’ve duplicated this post, so I’ll be deleting the other one.  Thanks for your understanding.

You can also walk from Grutschalp to Murren, it takes approx 90 minutes and is a beautiful walk providing views of Lauterbrunnen Valley. Also, walking the valley floor back from Stechelberg past Trummelbach Falls to Lauterbrunnen is one of my favorite hikes.  The walk back will take 2-3 hours.  Depending upon what time of year you are visiting, you may see wildflowers and waterfalls.  Beautiful!
