A traveler is planning an 11-12 day trip to Switzerland in December, focusing on Lauterbrunnen and Wengen for skiing. They need advice on whether to get the Swiss Travel Pass and how to manage their ski passes while exploring places like Lucerne, Zermatt, and Montreux.
Key takeaways:
The Swiss Travel Pass is not ideal for skiing; it's better to get a local ski pass as a beginner.
Hi I’ve read so many forum threads but am so confused still. Visiting beautiful Switzerland in Dec for about 11-12 days. There will be 4 days in the middle where we will be in the Lauterbrunnen/Wengen area for skiing and sightseeing. My question is should we be getting the Swiss travel pass (not too sure 8 or 15 day pass) consecutive or to break it up, and purchase ski pass for the days we are in grindelwald Wengen for ski? Does Swiss travel pass cover all the lifts required for ski and also transport around the place? We are complete beginners And staying in Lauterbrunnen those few days. The other areas we are visiting are Lucerne, Zermatt, maybe st Moritz (so we can do glacier express), maybe Montreux (so we can do golden pass). Everything is up in the air and flexible now. Except for the 4 nights in Lauterbrunnen.
Experience skiers would buy a full-blown ski pass – the Swiss Travel Pass is not good for extensive skiing.
However, as you are beginners you will only need a very local pass for the nursery slopes. But if you skiing is going to be concentrated in a few days in one place, you should have the Swiss Travel Pass Flex as it would be a waste of money to have a continuous STP and not use it during your skiing days.

I do not recommend the Swiss Travel Pass for skiing. For skiing, you can get a specific ski pass, while you are already in the Jungfrau region. If you are a beginner, I highly recommend starting with a ski class. We have a page about skiing in Switzerland, check it, I am sure you’ll find it useful: http://www.myswissalps.com/activities/winter/beginnerski.
I am with 1960man, a Swiss Travel Pass Flex + a regional ski pass will be great for your itinerary. Learn more about the Swiss Travel Pass: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass.
Hi thanks so much for your replies! Can I get help on the itinerary too? I’m flying into and out of Paris.
(from either Colmar or Annecy)
Lucerne 2 nights
Jungfrau area 4-5 nights (with 2-3 days of ski)
Zermatt 2 nights
Montreux 2 nights
(then to Colmar or Annecy)
does it sound alright? Which route makes sense using the train pass? We are still flexi with itinerary and days.
For travellers that are truly flexi (we don’t have fix things we want to do yet), would you recommend the Swiss travel pass? What I’m afraid of is the “pressure” of trying to make back the money spent on the pass! Or a half fare card works better?
It sounds right and doable. For the routes please use the timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable). The pass depends on your itinerary which mountain you want to visit. Both passes can be gound (either the Swiss Travel Pass or the Swiss Half Fare Card). You can make calculations to compare the travel costs. Here you’ll find our calculation spreadsheet, that will help you to do the math: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass.
Both passes give you flexibility, both can work for you. Learn more about them here:
Thanks! If I want to do golden pass should I go from interlaken to Montreux or is it ok to go from Zermatt to montreux? How do I fit in Zermatt into the itinerary?
