A traveler named DebH is planning a seven-night stay in Wengen from October 4th to 11th and is seeking dining options for one night. She is considering Lauterbrunnen or possibly Mürren but is unsure about the dining scene and the feasibility of returning to Wengen safely after dinner.
Key takeaways:
Check out the Silberhorn hotel in Lauterbrunnen for a delicious meal.
If dining in Mürren, ensure you time your return to Wengen carefully with the cable cars.
Many visitors recommend the half-board dining option at hotels, which offers good value for meals.
Grindelwald and Grindelwald First offer a wider variety of dining choices if you venture out during the day.

Hi, we are spending seven nights in Wengen in early October (4th to 11th). My husband has expressed interest in dining one night somewhere else.
I thought Lauterbrunnen would be best, but I can’t find anywhere particularly appealing to dine there – any suggestions would be welcome.
If not, is it possible to eat in Murren and catch the required cablecars back? Looking on SBB they run until 11pm or so, although I doubt I would risk being that late.
Has anyone done this? I do sort of like the idea of riding at night too.
No, I have never done that! Many people staying in those small mountain villages (including me) often take the half-board option at their hotel, which is very good value, and lovely food.
I don’t think I would bother with a special trip to Mürren (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/murren/) for dinner, but on any day you are already on that side of the valley for sightseeing, staying for dinner might be a nice idea.
I have travelled from Wengen (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/wengen/) to Interlaken
( https://www.myswissalps.com/town/interlaken/) in the dark, but I don’t recall it being particularly interesting. With such small villages you don’t get much of a “light show” so to speak, although I have seen the Staubbach Falls illuminated at night.
I’ll be interested to see what others have to say though!

Thank you Alpenrose, I was meaning more that if we visited Murren lateish in the day, maybe stopping and having dinner there just to change things up.
I have looked at half board options, which are obviously much cheaper, but we really enjoy eating somewhere different each evening when away on holidays.
This is more my husband’s idea than mine, and it might never happen, but just wondered if it was doable.
Another option is staying in Lauterbrunnen for dinner, but there doesn’t seem to be much there worth eating at, maybe I just haven’t discovered it yet though.
Last year we visited all the towns you mentioned. We stopped at Wengen during the day, had a quick lunch, and continued onto other towns. It is a small town and as we walked around I didn’t find many things to do other than just relax. Maybe you have done your own research. I would think that Lauterbrunnen for dinner would provide some choices. Since you have 7 nights, you can try allot of towns. I don’t know how late the trains run.
Thanks so much Big Dad. I have read a few of your posts re your trip.
Originally I was booked in Grindelwald, but then the hotel became unavailable for our entire week, so we switched.
So many had raved about Wengen, so we bit the bullet and booked there.
I had a good list of restaurants in Grindelwald, but we aren’t early eaters so I think that is too far for dinner. Will definitely do lunch there though as we certainly plan to visit all the towns.
I’ve had friends dine at the Silberhorn hotel in Lauterbrunnen and they thought the food was delicious there.
I think that’s a lovely idea, if you are already in Mürren and there is a restaurant that takes your interest, then it would be nice to enjoy a meal too. As you are aware, just time it so you can make your way back to Wengen in a timely manner.
To be honest, none of the restaurants in the smaller cities were winning raves, in my opinion.. I had perfectly serviceable meals at my hotel in Wengen, as well as some of the restaurants that line the main street in the village. The same can be said for the restaurants in Lauterbrunnen and Murren.. nothing was great. but some solid meals.. Having said that, there was a thai(?) chinese(?) restaurant in Murren i went to because I was craving asian food/rice… That was certainly NOT the highlight meal of the trip… But then, keep in mind that this isn’t Zurich or Basel.
To address your other question, I found it very easy to get back and forth from Murren to Wengen .. (they are on opposite sides of the valley). of course it takes an entire afternoon to do the walking to/from the cable cars… but I definitely recommend walking around Murren and parts in between.. It’s quite lovely.
