Hi Timbertrail,
no worries about the number of posts, that is totally fine. The most important thing that you give the information so we can help you. 🙂
Yvoire is not on the way to Zurich, but you could visit it from Montreux if you add an extra night during your trip. It is actually already in France, as it is the other part of Lake Geneva. You can travel by a longer boat journey there from Montreux with 100 years old steamboats. Unfortunately the boat company does not have the next summer timetable yet, but this year they had a route between the 2 cities/villages. (I do not remember exactly but probably with a change in Lausanne). Learn more about boats on Lake Geneva: http://www.myswissalps.com/bo atlakegeneva
Thun (http://www.myswissalps.com/th un/activities) is a nice town too with a castle (and a few around). It is bigger than Yvoire, but it is half on the way from Zermatt to Zurich. In the summer time young adults are jumping from the bridges into the river in the city and they are swimming to the next one, where they climb up, then jump again. Also you can see surfers at the old wooden bridge. It is so much fun just to watch them. Lake Thun is beautiful too (http://www.myswissalps.com/bo atlakethun).

Hi Timbertrail
I have never stayed there, but why don’t you stay in Zurich as you are flying out of Zurich airport. http://www.myswissalps.com/la kezurich or http://www.myswissalps.com/zu rich/hotels.
If you are flying out at 12 noon you will need to be at the airport 2 or 3 hours before your flight.
Enjoy your holiday.

Thanks. These are nice suggestions but not what I’m looking for. We won’t be altering other parts of our trip or adding days. We plan a visit to Thun during our days in Lauterbrunnen.
Zurich accommodations are very expensive, so we don’t want to stay right in Zurich. Looking for small town romance. 😉

Hi Timbertrail,
I totally understand. Could you tell as a bit more about your itinerary please? I didn’t know that you are already planning to visit Thun. 🙂
I haven’t been there, but after a search maybe Sempach at Sempachersee would be good, it is really small town. It is close to Lucerne though. You could also check Biel, on the shore of Lake Biel.
Are you looking for something like those?

Sempach. I’d second that. Was there in June. Or Stein am Rhein. That’s beyond Zurich, though, but not too far. Also, it is on a river rather than on a lake. Then there is Yvoire, on the French side of Lake Geneva, but truly medieval, you reach it by boat from Nyon or Rolle.
To avoid crowds select Sempach. If you don’t mind crowds select one of the other two.

Thanks everyone. Still undecided, but you’ve given me some options to ponder…

Your point taken, but you are adding a lot of parameters for your request. Since you don’t want to re-arrange any of the rest of your itinerary and you seem to already have planned lots of lakeside mediavel locations, there may not be much left for you to go at.
Much easier would be mediavel but not on water. A good example of this is Lenzburg. This is ideally situated for you – close to Zürich but possibly cheaper to stay and the castle is good.

Yvoire France is supposed to be a wonderful medieval city on the lake.

I don’t think Yvoire will quite work in between Zermatt and Zurich via Glacier Express. But thanks! I will check out Lenzburg! Thanks

Hello Timbertail,
Hope to nod add more confusion by adding more possibilities, but in the area of Zurich and the Lake of Zurich you could look at the village of Rapperswil, a medieval village on the far end of the Lake of Zurich, or Hurden, Lachen, etc.
Not really on the way from Zermatt to Zurich, but easy to reach from Zurich.
Have a look at this link, I found the Hotel Marina Lachen and the Hotel Rössli Hurden two very nice options.
