Swiss Alps in 1.5 days. Matterhorn vs Jungfrau

Short summary – read this first

Gary, a traveler from the US, is planning a quick 1.5-day visit to Switzerland with his family. They're flying into Zurich and want a flexible itinerary focusing on scenic experiences without long waits or cable cars. He’s seeking advice on whether to drive or take the train, and which mountain visit would be best given their time constraints.

Key takeaways:
  • For a short trip, focus on Zermatt and take the train instead of driving for a more relaxing experience.
  • Consider visiting Gornergrat for great views of the Matterhorn, as it's accessible by train.
  • If you're short on time, visiting Mt. Pilatus near Lucerne may be a quicker alternative.
  • Opt for the Swiss Travel Pass for unlimited travel and convenience on trains.

    Hi-

We are a family of 4 with 2 kids(12 & 16). Need help with the Itenary for 1.5 days. Flying from London into Zurich at 10AM on Jul 1 and flying back from Zurich on Jul 2 at 9:30 PM.

Our family is very impatient with wait times at long lines and long walks, need flexibility to stopover as required without time limits, Cable Cars or Gondolas is a NO NO, trains to mountains is OK. we enjoy scenic rides, car drives, would like to visit one of the mountains and enjoy the scenery.

    1) We are US residents so as I understand car driving is similar except with some strict traffic rules and parking costs. But maybe it gives more flexibility than a train? Is it comfortable to drive all the way to Zermatt and back in such a shot period?

    2) If u suggest train over car? Which one do u suggest, Swiss Pass/Half fare/Point to Point?

    3) Where to station on Jul1 night?

    4) Which is the best bang for the buck and time between Matterhorn vs Jungfrau. I understand both are great visits but given the time constraint which is better?

May be we’ll get to visit one place but it should capture the essence of Swiss Alps.

Appreciate if you can give an Itenary each for both Car and Train options.

    Thank you Very Much

    Gary

Hello Gary and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Nice to hear you’re coming to Switzerland for a short stay. Unfortunately we do not set up itineraries, but rather provide helpful information for you to figure out what suits you best.

To get to the Klein Matterhorn in Zermatt you will have to take a cable car, so that sounds like a no go for your family.

Alternatively you can look at the Gornergrat in Zermatt, to be reached by cogwheel train. The same is the case for the Jungfraujoch, it is the highest train station in Europe, so you arrive by train.

    Find details below:

Zermatt is car-free, so you can’t get all the way there by car (only up to Tasch).

    Make sure to read:

Find out about arrival times by train to the destinations with our timetable:

    Hi Gary.
My wife and I have been to both, twice, and love them both. First, forget the car and take the train. So much more relaxing. I recommend Zermatt for your short trip. Get a train from Zurich to Zermatt and spend the evening in that beautiful fun town. Get up early and take the first train up to Gornergrat and enjoy the amazing views of the Matterhorn and the glaciers.
Take the train back down and head back to Zurich. Sadly that’s all you’ll be able to do but it will be worth it.
Switzerland is so beautiful, you will have to go back and see the whole country. The small towns are just as beautiful and interesting as the famous big cities.
    Enjoy your trip.

    Hi Gary

You will spend about 4 hours one way to get to either Jungfrau or Zermatt areas (Zermatt being a little closer). That’s a sizable amount of your limited time. You might look into going strait to Lucerne and visiting Mt. Pilatus as it is much closer to Zurich.

definitely trains over cars. Just curious why would cable cars be a no no?
