Best rail pass for ski trip for 6 in Andermatt, Zermatt

Short summary – read this first

Bob Scott is planning a 9-day ski trip for a group of 6 adults to Andermatt and Zermatt from February 15 to 23. They are seeking advice on the best Swiss Rail Pass for train travel from Zurich Airport to Andermatt, skiing for 3 days, and then traveling to Zermatt via the Glacier Express. They want to know about seat reservations and upgrades available for their pass.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider buying a 3-day Swiss Travel Pass Flex for travel during your trip, but check if Saver Day Passes are cheaper for your specific travel dates.
  • You will need to reserve seats in advance for the Glacier Express, but the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn train does not require a reservation.
  • It's better to travel from Andermatt to Zermatt via the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn for convenience, instead of the Glacier Express due to high reservation costs.

Hi there, we are a group of 6 adults planning a 9 day (Feb 15-Feb 23) ski trip to Andermatt and Zermatt. We are trying to determine the best Swiss Rail Pass to buy when traveling from Zurich Airport to Andermatt, skiing for 3 days (Feb 16-18) @ Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis (Epic Ski Pass). We understand when arriving at Andermatt tickert window and receive the Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis access card with our Epic Plass, we then have the opportunity to an upgrade with access to the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn Train, connecting ASD, for an exclusive price. Is this true?

We then plan to depart from Andermatt on Feb 19 and travel to Zermatt, preferably on the Glacier Express train, skiing 3-4 days (Feb 19-22). I understand we would need to make reservations for the Glacier Express train.  Is this different than the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn Train? Based on the fact we are about 6 weeks out from our trip, is it too early or late to secure these reservations?

We then plan to depart Zermatt on Feb 22 to return back to Zurich Airport for our departure back to the U.S. on Feb 23.

Thank you for any guidance you can provide us!
    Bob Scott

    Hi Ski Bum,

Thank you for sharing your travel plans.

Yes, you can upgrade the Epic Pass to include access to the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn train service between Andermatt, Sedrun and Disentis.

However you will still need rail tickets to travel from Zurich Airport to Andermatt and from Andermatt to Zermatt. You can find information about buying point-to-point tickets here: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/regular-ticket/

In addition, you will need to reserve seats in advance if you are planning to take the scenic Glacier Express train.  Please see information on how to reserve your seats here: https://www.myswissalps.com/blog/glacier-express-reservations/

The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn operates services from Andermatt to Zermatt too — this does not require seat reservation.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Anna

    Hello again Skibum

we are a group of 6 adults planning a 9 day (Feb 15-Feb 23) ski trip to Andermatt and Zermatt. We are trying to determine the best Swiss Rail Pass to buy when traveling from Zurich Airport to Andermatt, skiing for 3 days (Feb 16-18)

See the discussion between Richard Keatley and myself in your previous thread.  (It is replies 3 to 9; but it is 6 to 9 which are most important.)  In your situation you should probably get a three day Swiss Travel Pass Flex (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass-flex/) , 289 CHF per adult over 25 years old, 202.30 CHF for an under-25.

As an alternative, you MIGHT be able to get Saver Day Passes (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/saver-day-pass/) for the 15th, 19th and 22nd for a cheaper total price.

In reply 8 of the previous thread I wrote

‘Regarding investing in Saver Day Pass for the three days you will be travelling to, between and from your resorts, if AS OF NOW the total is less than 289 CHF, then, subject to the point I make in my next paragraph, go for it.  But buy NOW.  The prices of SDPs do fluctuate in response to demand, and do tend to go up as you get nearer the actual date of travel. (Note – no discounts on SDPs for under 25s.)

Epic Pass validity on the MGB railway line Amdermatt to Disentis.

     The relevant website states,

With the Epic Pass, the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway [Andermatt-Disentis] is not included. However, you can purchase an upgrade at the lift ticket counters. For more information, please inquire directly at the counters.’

    Glacier express Andermatt to Zermatt?

I would say No!  Use the ordinary the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn trains running hourly, changing at VISP.

On the 19th the first ’ordinary’ train leaves Andermatt at 07 37 and arrives Visp at 09 50.  The connecting train to Zermatt leaves Visp at 10 11 and reaches Zermatt at 11 17.  This pattern repeats itself hourly for the rest of the day.  (Eg if you leave Andermatt at 09 37 you reach Zermatt at 13 17.)

The only advantage of using the Glacier Express is that it is a through train taking two hours and 59 minutes.

The disadvantages of the Glacier Express.

The only departures from Andermatt are at 14 08 and 15 08. (Remember the trains start from St Moritz!)

You will have to pay a very hefty reservation fee of 54 (yes fifty-four!) Swiss Francs PER PERSON.

The trains may already be fully booked.

    Kind regards

    Roger

    Hi Anna,

Thank you for your earlier response. To make it easier on our group, I’m now considering a van service (like a Mercedes Sprinter Van) from Zurich Airport to Andermatt and then also from Zermatt back to Zurich Airport at the end of our trip. Do you have any preferred van services you would recommend for both of these legs of our trip?

In between we will most likely take the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn train from Andermatt to Zermatt, which seems to offer us the most flexibility.

Thanks again for all your help.
    Bob

    Hi Bob,

I recommend looking into AtoB Transfer. They can offer private transfers for lots of routes in Switzerland (and other countries).

Note that they can’t take you all the way from Zermatt, as this can only be reached by train. But they should be able to pick you up from nearby Täsch. More info: https://www.myswissalps.com/town/zermatt/#travel

    I hope this helps!
