Swiss Travel Pass Flex for trip in June

Short summary – read this first

Jen is super excited for her first trip to Switzerland from June 15 to June 19. She's planning a packed itinerary that includes visiting Zurich, Lucerne, the Jungfrau Region, and Geneva. Jen needs advice about the best Swiss Travel Pass to purchase and recommendations for cheese and chocolate in Gruyeres.

Key takeaways:
  • Purchase the 6-day Swiss Travel Pass instead of the Flex to cover all travel days and save money.
  • If using the Swiss Travel Pass, you can get discounts on the Top of Europe Pass for Jungfrau activities.
  • In Gruyeres, visit Le Maison de Gruyere for cheese and the Maison Cailler chocolate factory for a tasty experience.

    Hello!

First, I’d just like to say THANK YOU for the time and energy you put into this forum! I am not well-travelled but love it nonetheless. This will be my first trip to Switzerland and this site and forum have been immensely helpful in my planning. THANK YOU!!

If I may, I’d like to share my itinerary and plans for our trip, June 15-June 19. We are cramming in as much as possible and wish we had time for more. I’d appreciate your feedback!

We plan to purchase the Swiss Travel Pass Flex.

June 15-arrive Zurich @10:30. Train to Lucerne-boat to Burgenstock (lunch and Hammetschwand)-boat back to Lucerne for a couple of hours-return to Zurich for dinner.

June 16-Jungfrau Region from Interlaken. I had seen a previous post about which pass to purchase for this: Top of Europe or ….was there another similar tour? If I purchase the STP, is there a discount for this on viator.com? Want to check prior to booking.

    June 17-Interlaken-Oeschinesee-Grindlewald-Interlaken

June 18-Gruyeres to Geneva. Would love recommendations for chocolate and cheese stops in Gruyeres!

    June 19-Geneva & Lake Geneva

Thank you in advance for any and all input!! SOOOO excited for this trip!

    Jen

    Hi Jenla13,

Yes, the Top of Europe Pass is reduced if you have the Swiss Travel Pass Flex (must be validated). I am not sure if this option is available when you purchase from Viator, but you can try. Options to purchase the Swiss Travel Pass Flex are available here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpassflex/price

In Gruyeres, be sure to visit the Le Maison de Gruyere to see how cheese are made. You can combine this with a trip to the Maison Cailler chocolate factory.

    Hope this helps!

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi Jen!

Which Swiss Travel Pass Flex did you have in mind: a 4-day (CHF 323) or 6-day CHF (384) variant? I think a regular 6-day Swiss Travel Pass (CHF 359) makes more sense. It will cover all of your travel days and it’s cheaper than the 6-day Swiss Travel Pass Flex. If you planned to get a 4-day Swiss Travel Pass Flex, you’d still have one day of your trip uncovered. Costs for full-fare tickets or an additional pass (see below) will add up to way more than the CHF 36 price difference between a 6-day Swiss Travel Pass and a 4-day Swiss Travel Pass Flex.

You can find all price options and compare them here:

The Swiss Travel Pass Flex is best for longer stays with some days of intensive traveling, and some days with no or only short/inexpensive trips. For the continuous days you have in mind, the regular Swiss Travel Pass works better.

As for the Top of Europe Pass: it’s available from a 3-day validity period. I think you planned to use it for June 16, instead of a Swiss Travel Pass Flex travel day, right? Swiss Travel Pass Flex holders can get the Top of Europe Pass for a reduced fare, but as Anna mentioned: you’re only entitled to this discount if you use a Swiss Travel Pass Flex travel day while using the Top of Europe Pass (a similar construction works for the Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland for example, as explained here: https://www.myswissalps.com/regionalpassberneseoberland/price). If you had planned to not use a Swiss Travel Pass Flex travel day on June 16, you’d have to pay the full Top of Europe Pass fare, which is CHF 249 for a 3-day variant.

So in this case too it pays off to get a 6-day Swiss Travel Pass. You then have 2 options for June 16:

    • get a Top of Europe Pass with a 3-day validity period for the reduced fare of CHF 159 (you’re entitled to this, since you’ll have a valid Swiss Travel Pass on the date at which you use your Top of Europe Pass), or
    • get free traveling in the Jungfrau region from and to Grindelwald, Mürren and Wengen and get reduced tickets for your mountain trips with your Swiss Travel Pass. Please find validity details here: https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity

The discounted Top of Europe Pass can certainly make sense if you plan to make several mountain trips in the Jungfrau region on June 16, e.g. to Grindelwald-First (https://www.myswissalps.com/grindelwaldfirst), Männlichen (https://www.myswissalps.com/mannlichen) Schynige Platte (https://www.myswissalps.com/schynigeplatte) or Jungfraujoch (https://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch). Those would be for free with the Top of Europe Pass, but discounted with a Swiss Travel Pass. Note that Schilthorn (https://www.myswissalps.com/schilthorn) is not included in the Top of Europe Pass, but is discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass.

    Anna and Annika,

Thank you for the information. This is helpful!!

Having never been to Switzerland, you you think it is best to purchase the group tour to Jungfraujoch? I am going to purchase the 6-day STP as Annika recommended.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Jen,

Train traveling in Switzerland is pretty easy (http://www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/howtotravel). Getting to Jungfraujoch on your own is too, especially if you’re based in Interlaken or another town in the Jungfrau region.

Just pick a route (https://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/gettingthere), which you can plan in detail using the timetable (https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable). Then get your discounted tickets, either online in advance or at the spot (https://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/tickets).

Of course there’s nothing wrong with booking a tour (https://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/packages) if you prefer to skip the planning.
